Balkan Hound Dog Names

The Balkan Hound is better known as the Serbian Hound within the United States, but in Europe they are still referred to as the Balkan Hound. They are considered a rare breed, even in their native country because sport hunting has begun to decline and people have not seen the Balkan Hound’s true potential as a medium-sized family companion. Many breeds bred for hunting such as the Balkan Hound can easily transition into a family home when they are given enough time to exercise and have the proper training. The United Kingdom is home to only one known Balkan Hound. However, Lady and Duke are coming into the United Kingdom but will find themselves in the care of Basset Hound Rescue UK run by Lyn Bailey. Bailey hopes to find a home where Lady and Duke will be together. Once they arrive in the UK, Bailey will begin assessing their health and temperament before seeking their permanent home. Aside from the Basset Hound Rescue UK, there is another non-profit charity working with the Balkan Hound. Balkan Underdogs was founded in 2012 and is solely run by volunteers. The charity works with all different breed types that have been neglected in the Balkans including the Balkan Hound. Balkan Underdogs is a UK based charity that has worked diligently to raise awareness and money to aid these dogs and find them loving, permanent homes. Balkan Underdogs have a team of volunteers based in the UK and in the Balkans. The team in the Balkans has the task of finding and rescuing neglected dogs and then housing them and making sure they are given the necessary medical treatments before they are adopted. Dogs that are rescued are also assessed for their suitability to be adopted into a family setting and any necessary training is also completed prior to adoption.

The Balkan Hound has been in existence since the 11^th century and was solely owned by nobility. They were highly sought after for their hunting abilities and many times were given as gifts to other nobility throughout the Balkans. Researchers believe the Balkan Hound is related to the ancient hounds that existed in Asia Minor and Egyptian hounds that were brought into the Balkans by Phoenician traders sometime during 1000 B.C. In 1996 the Balkan Hound was officially changed to the Serbian Hound, however, many people still refer to the breed as the Balkan Hound and are mainly found in Serbia and Montenegro, as well as other Balkan countries.
