Best 8-Letter Dog Names

You might remember him as a big red dog – that's right, Clifford! Thanks to Scholastic, elementary school book fairs, and the children's section at your local bookstore, Clifford has been all the rage among the young crowd since 1963. To this day, you can find Clifford books in all places books are sold. In the 1980's to 1990's even a home video collection was released so children could watch their favorite dog run around on adventures. Episodes like The Scavenger Hunt and Clifford Goes to Hollywood resonated with fans, whom still watch the show online to this day. 

Of course, there's also Junkyard, the Labrador Retriever from the 2009 Disney movie Race to Witch Mountain, featuring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. In it, Johnson plays Jack Bruno, a cab driver with a shady past who has to save the planet with two kids. It ticked all the boxes, including spaceships, government agents, and of course, a canine star named Junkyard. The dog is hilarious, since he starts off rather intimidating and territorial, but quickly winds up licking faces. He develops an instant bond with the children and is a bit of a sidekick to the trio. He saves the world! From spaceships! 

Finally, there's Ladybird, the Bloodhound from the King of the Hill series, which was on air from 1997 to 2010. The animated sitcom focused on a Texan family and their adventures, usually focusing on a realistic, albeit hilarious rendition of everyday life. And like any other American family full of heart and love to give, they had a dog – in this case, a precious thirteen-year-old Georgia Bloodhound by the name of Ladybird Hill. Of course, she was named after Claudia Alta, better known as "Lady Bird Johnson," the First Lady of the United States from 1963-1969. And the name fit: she was an old, loving family dog that lived and breathed for her humans.  

Now, King of the Hill was a hilarious sitcom, so humor was part of Ladybird's story. It was explained that she helped Hank, her owner, feel so stress-free that he could finally start a family with his wife, Peggy. This is a tremendous feat, because Hank is normally very confused or anxious about things, especially modern trends, public displays of affection, and anything else that may or may not impact his manliness. So Ladybird deserved some applause. It was also explained that her mother tracked down the iconic criminal James Earl Ray, known for the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.
