Everyone loves Canada, eh? The people, the lifestyle, the landscapes, and the food draw millions of people to visit Canada each year. History? The country has more than you could imagine. Diversity? Canadian Dogs In Popular Culture
Everyone loves and respects a war hero. How about a canine war hero? Gander was this brave canine soldier’s name and he fought in the battle of Hong Kong in 1941. Gander wasn’t always a war dog, though. He began his life in Newfoundland (also the name of his breed) as a treasured family pet. One day during a frolic with the children, he accidentally scratched one of them which resulted in him being given away to the Royal Canadian Air Force stationed in Gander, Newfoundland.
A much loved regimental mascot for the 1st Battalion of the Royal Rifles of Canada, Gander was promoted to Sergeant so that he could travel with the battalion to a mission in Hong Kong. Gander valiantly fought in the Battle of Hong Kong which started early in December 1941, tackling enemy soldiers who got too close to his men. Sadly, a few weeks later, on December 19th, Gander was killed by a grenade. He heroically picked up the grenade and ran with it, saving the lives of his fellow soldiers, but losing his own.
Gander was posthumously awarded the Dickin medal 60 years later in 2000, with surviving members of the battle of Hong Kong attending the ceremony. This incredible dog’s name is also inscribed on the Hong Kong Veteran’s Memorial Wall alongside other brave soldiers who lost their lives in battle.
Inuk is another Canadian hero, although of another kind. He is one of 100 Canadian dogs making headlines at the Westminster dog show held annually in New York City. Inuk is a 10 year old American Eskimo Dog from Ontario and enters the prestigious competition as the top American Eskimo Dog in Canada for 10 years running. He has won Best in Breed at Westminster eight times and will make his way to compete again in 2018. With 2800 dogs attending the Westminster Kennel Club show yearly, we’d say Inuk has done a fabulous job of representing his breed just as Gander did so bravely on the war field.
