Einstein

Being one of the rarest breeds of dogs, it is no surprise that the Catalan Sheepdog is not as featured as some of the other sheepdog-type of dogs in pop culture. However, in the rare occasions that they have been showcased in some pop culture works, the breed has had some memorable roles. Perhaps the most notable out of these roles is that of Einstein, from the 1985 sci-fi adventure film Back to the Future.

Back to the Future tells the story of Marty McFly and odd scientist Dr. Emmett Brown, or commonly referred to as “Doc” and how they travel back in time to alter their history and return in 1985. Einstein, also often called “Einie”, is Doc’s pet Catalan Sheepdog. Doc had a knack for naming his pets after famous scientists; his first dog Copernicus (also a Catalan Sheepdog), was named after Nicolas Copernicus while Einstein was named after the renowned scientist Albert Einstein. Out of the two, however, it was Einstein who had a bigger role to play in the film.

Einstein served as the constant companion of Doc, way before Marty entered the picture. Oftentimes, Doc would use Einstein as a test subject for several of his experiments. Despite this, however, Doc had genuine compassion for his furry friend and would never put Einstein in any real danger. Einstein also developed a close bond with Marty during the times they spent together.

Another Catalan Sheepdog character that appeared in a well-known movie is Colonel, from the 1961 Disney animated film One Hundred and One Dalmatians. The plot of the film revolves around Pongo and Perdita as the try to find their puppies, who were stolen by Cruella de Vil. The film was an adaptation of the book The Hundred and One Dalmatians by author Dodie Smith and was released as the 17^th feature film from Disney. In the film, the Colonel played a minor but important role. He receives Pongo’s plea for help through the gossip line called “Twilight Bark”. Together with his crew, consisting of Captain and Sergeant Tibbs, Colonel was able to locate the puppies. He was also crucial in helping the Dalmatian puppies escape and reunite with their parents. Colonel also made an appearance in the sequel, entitled 101 Dalmatians II: Patch’s London Adventure.

The Catalan Sheepdog is also popular in his native country of Spain. In fact, during the 1992 Summer Olympics, which was held in the Spanish city of Barcelona, the official mascot was a Catalan Sheepdog named Cobi.
