Cereal Inspired Dog Names

When Ralston Purina’s Cookie Crisp cereal came on the scene in the late 1970s, the mascot was actually a wizard. His name was Jarvis, and he used his magic to bring you a delicious bowl of breakfast goodness. In the 80s, the company used Cookie Cop and Cookie Crook in their kid-friendly commercials, and the cops and robbers effect was a hit for the label. However, in 1990, the brand found its niche with a pawesome idea!

Chip the Dog joined the crew and became a partner to Cookie Crook instead of a police dog for Cookie Cop. Together, Crook and Chip stirred up mischief and tried to steal Cookie Crisp cereal. The ads usually ended with Cop catching Crook and Chip; Cookie Cop would then explain that this cereal was part of your balanced breakfast. Chip quickly became known as the dog that would howl the name of the morning treat: “Coo-ooooooookie Crisp!”

In the late 90s, Ralston Purina sold Cookie Crisp to General Mills, and the mascot shifted. Cookie Crook and Cop were dropped from the box and ads, and the dog took over. And that’s maybe how it always should have been. We, for one, love Chip the Dog here at Wag! And we certainly like thinking about cookies for breakfast. That’ll bring out the kid in you if nothing else will!

Chip the Dog lost his robbing mask and, instead, extended boxes and bowls of Cookie Crisp to kids. Usually, an adult figure would step in, and he or she would state what we all assume: “Hey, cookies aren’t for breakfast!” However, by the end of the commercial, Chip the Dog, the kids, the parents, and the audience at home would be cookies-for-breakfast believers. The proof was in the taste!

In 2005, Chip the Wolf stole the cereal show, and he’s now the face of Cookie Crisp. We’re just glad you kept it in the canine family, General Mills. We now see “The Howler,” but many of us probably remember the cereal campaign’s roots with Chip and the gang.
