Christmas Dog Names

 Throughout history, many dogs have had their own starring roles in literature, art and even on the silver screen. People often name their puppy after a dog from the movies or even a person because it brings them happiness every time they call their dog’s name. There are many dogs bought or adopted at Christmastime who are called “Christmas” not just after the holiday itself, but after the Yellow Labrador Retriever named Christmas in Greg Kincaid’s novel,​ A Dog Named Christmas. ​ This popular novel was made into a movie by the same title.

 In this great novel, a developmentally challenged young man takes on the task of finding shelter dogs homes for Christmas. His father is opposed to this and refuses to help or allow one of the dogs into their home because of past hurts that he never revealed. By the end of the story though, the entire family has been transformed and has grown closer because of one special yellow Labrador Retriever named Christmas. We all know that animals can make their way into your heart pretty quickly, and like the dog in this movie, a furry friend can teach everyone to love one another and have goodwill that lasts not just throughout the Christmas season, but throughout the year. If you like the idea of naming your dog after this festive season, you could shorten the name to Chris or Chrissy.

 Another famous dog from the movies​ ​who has a Christmas name​ is the lovable Golden Retriever named Santa Paws from Disney’s ​Santa Buddies. In this fun family movie, Santa’s chief dog, Santa Paws, is distracted and worried about Christmas. He does not have the time to appreciate his son’s, Puppy Paws, antics. Puppy Paws makes a wish that there is no Christmas and he is transformed from a magical North Pole puppy into just an ordinary dog. Luckily, he is helped by the Buddies, the fun-loving Golden Retriever puppies. Both Santa Paws and Puppy Paws learn valuable lessons in love, respect and spreading Christmas cheer. After the release of the movie, many dogs have been named Santa Paws or even Puppy Paws. Some pet parents have chosen other names from this film like Sniffer, Tiny, or Eddy the elf, after the spunky little Jack Russell Terrier in the movie.

 Not to be left out of mention is the canine hero Beethoven from ​Beethoven’s Christmas Adventure. He saves the day by solving a mystery and returning Santa’s toy bag and sleigh to the North Pole just in time for Christmas deliveries. This gentle Saint Bernard will surely be the name inspiration for many a Christmas dog.
