Albert is a dog from Fairfield, Connecticut, who is well-known on social media. Albert is like most dogs; he loves to run, play with his friends and eat a lot of treats. The Shih-Tzu, who uses a dog wheelchair, is better known, however, then many pups, receiving several hundred pieces of mail a month. A member of the Lawson family, his owner, Jill Lawson explained that it is thought that he was hit by a car as he was found on the side of a road, paralyzed. He was adopted by the Lawson’s at about five years old and since then has been gaining followers, about 100,000 on Instagram. Known as “Albert on Wheels”, fans are treated to a nearly daily picture of him, whether sleeping or exploring.

According to his owners, Albert’s Instagram purpose is to spread the word about rescuing animals, in particular those with handicaps. Albert is proof that regardless of having a disability, a pet with a handicap can be as loving as one without.

Another well-known Connecticut dog is Sergeant Stubby. The pooch, thought to be a Bull Terrier or Boston Terrier, was born around 1916 or 1917 and was found wandering around the Yale University campus in July of 1917, while members of the 102^nd Infantry were training. One soldier, Corporal Robert Conroy, became particularly attached to the pooch. When it was time to ship out, he hid Stubby on board the troop ship; as they were getting off the ship in France, he his him under his overcoat to avoid detection. Once Stubby was discovered by Conroy’s commanding officer, Stubby saluted him; as he had learned in camp. The commanding officer allowed him to stay. The pooch was considered the official mascot of the 102^nd Infantry Regiment, where he served for 18 months, participating in 17 battles. Stubby was a successful soldier, having saved his regiment from mustard gas attacks, as well as finding and comforting those wounded in battle. He even caught a German soldier and held him by his pants until his soldiers arrived.

Stubby is considered the most decorated war dog of World War I and is the only dog to be nominated for rank and promoted to sergeant through combat. The dog is the subject of an animated film that is scheduled to be released in the spring of 2018.
