Rose

Rosenborg Castle is a renaissance castle in Copenhagen. Built by Scandinavian King, Christian IV, the castle houses the stunning Denmark crown jewels. Rose is the name of a Siberian Husky puppy whose owner refused to leave behind because she was the jewel of his life. A Syrian refugee from Damascus, Aslan was living where power and water had been cut off, war was raging in the streets and where it was too dangerous to go outside. His only hope was to flee on foot. When considering what to bring with him as he sought safety, the 17-year-old knew for sure that he had to bring his best friend, Rose with him.

Aslan would not consider leaving Rose behind. He packed a small backpack with food, water and Rose’s passport and began a journey of around 311 miles to the Greek island of Lesbos. With Rose along with him, Aslan was smiling in spite of the long journey. When asked by the UNHCR why he would bring his dog when his backpack had barely enough food for himself, he responded with a laugh, repeated over and over, “I love this dog”. Aslan and Rose gained a lot of media attention, with a video of the pair shared on the UNHCR Facebook page, where it was viewed over five million times. The video received many comments in response, with offers of assistance. A woman whose name happens to be Rose Aslan, commented, “I find it serendipitous that the dog has my first name and the boy has my last name - is there any way I can get in touch with the boy? I’d love to help him out!”

The Facebook post also makes note of the fact that Aslan’s decision is not that unusual. UNHCR stated that when refugees flee their homes, many would never consider leaving their pets behind.

King’s Garden is Copenhagen’s oldest park. King is also the name of a Wire Fox Terrier who earned the crown at the 143^rd Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. He is the 15^th dog of the breed to win best in show. King is seven years old and according to best in show judge Peter Green is “as good as it gets". King was chosen over the course of two days from a field of 2,800 dogs of 203 different breeds. The field was narrowed down to seven dogs, with each being the “best specimen” from each group (herding, hound, sporting, and more).
