Dog Names Ending in do

Fido may be a common canine name, but there are several dogs named Fido that are not common at all. In fact, they are heroes, movie stars, and one was even the dog of a President of the United States. The first Fido we want to tell you about was a street dog who was born in Borgo San Lorenzo in the Tuscan Province of Florence, Italy sometime in the spring of 1941. 

On a cool night in November 1941, a man named Carlo Soriani was walking home from the bus stop after a day at his job as a brick kiln worker. Carlo saw a dog laying in a ditch on the side of the road, and he appeared to be injured, so he took him home and nursed him back to health. Carlo and his wife could not find his owner and decided to keep him and named him Fido, which means faithful in Italian. 

Every day when Carlo went to work, Fido would follow him to the bus stop and watch him go and then he would be there at the bus stop when he got off work. This went on for two years, with Fido hanging around the bus stop area just waiting for his master to come home. However, it was during the Second World War and on December 30, 1943, Carlo was killed when his factory was bombed. 

According to Carlo’s wife and many of the townspeople of Ludo di Mugello, Fido went to that bus stop every day at the same time, waiting for Carlo to return. He continued to go to the bus stop daily until he passed away in June of 1958. However, before he died, the community talked about Fido so much that it became a major news story and was even on the cover of Time Magazine in 1957. In addition, the mayor gave Fido a gold medal for his faithfulness. 

Another faithful Fido was Abraham Lincoln’s Golden Shepherd, which is a Golden Retriever mixed with a German Shepherd. Fido was born in 1855 and lived with the Lincoln family for five years in Springfield, Illinois. He often followed Abraham around town carrying the daily newspaper or something else that Abraham needed to be carried. Unfortunately, when Abraham became president, Fido was too scared of the train to travel, so he was given to a family friend. 

The final Fido we want to talk about is the pooch in the 1915 silent movie, “Fatty’s Faithful Fido.” Being a silent movie, the storyline is not easily described, but it was basically a story about two men (Fatty and Al) who both like the same woman. She chooses Fatty, and Al gets mad, starting a fight, and Fido attacks Al and saves his master. He was forever known as a faithful friend and hero for his heroic efforts.
