Dog Names Ending in ing

Yukon King is the wonder dog companion of Sergeant Preston of the TV series and comic book series titled Sergeant Preston of the Yukon. The series began as a 15 minute radio program called Challenge of the Yukon which aired from 1938 to 1947 on a local Detroit radio station until Quaker Oats began to sponsor it.  The radio series moved to a half-hour length program format and was picked up by the networks, where it played from June, 1947 to November, 1951 when its title was changed.  The radio program, now titled Sergeant Preston of the Yukon, was played over a variety of networks at that time, its final episode being aired on June 9, 1955.  In 1955, the program became a TV series, with 78 weekly episodes airing from 1955 to 1958.  Yukon King was a real dog, though not played by a Husky in the TV series but rather by a large Alaskan Malamute.  Throughout the radio, TV and comic book series, King is depicted as one of only two characters in the series, being described as the "snowbound version of the sagebrush sagas" which graced the airwaves at that time.  In all of the various types of series, Preston and King are deeply involved in such activities as catching murderers, claim jumping miners, gangs of thieves and rescuing people, with King frequently doing most of the work!  King is Preston's strongest ally, second only to Rex, his horse.  King is not only Preston's companion but he's also the lead sled dog and possesses a keen ability to sense criminal activity and danger.  While it is never specifically stated exactly his paternal heritage, King is depicted as having a mother who was part wolf, enhancing these traits.

Suening was a dog-king of Norway in the 11th century A.D. As legend has it, there are three separate tales in the annals of Nordic history of canine kings coming out of Denmark, Norway and Sweden.  John Lindow, professor of Scandinavian at UC Berkley, reports that, while there are three separate stories, they share a common theme ... the dogs were installed as dog-king by an over-king who had just conquered the people, a move intended to be an insult to the conquered people and country.  Serving as dog-king from the Drontheim region of Norway in the 11th century, Saurr (Suening) was seated as king by Eystein, the king of the Norwegian Uplands after the people (recently conquered) killed his son.  He gave the people the choice of being governed by his slave or his dog ... the people chose the dog, thinking they could do away with the dog more easily.  But, Suening is said to have been gifted with the wisdom of three men as well as the ability to speak a broken kind of language that consisted of words and barks.  Saurr (Suening) was not only the king, but he was also the shepherd of the royal fold of cattle ... a responsibility which he took seriously ... to the point of his death in defense of the fold against a pack of attacking wolves.
