Huckleberry Hound

The world of children's entertainment can be an interesting place to go, even for adults. Cartoons and children's movies and books can open up a huge world to our young ones, introducing them to many "real" world situations in less intimidating ways their developing minds can understand and accept. Our pop culture spotlights today come from that world of children's entertainment, especially from the world of cartoon characters from the late 1950's to mid 1960's. Our first pop culture dog with big ears is Huckleberry Hound (Huck). Huck is an animated character in a cartoon series created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera which ran four seasons, airing sixty-nine 30-minute episodes from October, 1958 to December, 1961. The Huckleberry Hound series was a spring board for other cartoon programs which were equally or more successful: Yogi Bear, Pixie and Dixie and Mr. Jinks, and Hokey Wolf. Huck would be depicted in at least one of three 7-minute cartoons, alone or with one or more other characters, and the cartoons would display some interesting daily life situations in a fun and challenging way. The end result would always teach or support a moral tenet for the edification of the viewer, regardless of age.

Our second pop culture 'big ears' dog is Snuffles, a floppy-eared, treat-loving dog from the 1960's cartoon series, Quick Draw McGraw. Our second pop culture spotlight was one of Quick Draw's compadres, Snuffles, a bloodhound who frequently assisted Quick Draw and Baba Looey but only after being given a dog biscuit. Snuffles will always be remembered for his physical response after eating his dog biscuit ... specifically, he would be seen hugging himself, springing into the air and then floating back down to earth. I don't know about you, but I certainly have had that feeling when eating a particularly yummy treat! As many of you may recall, this cartoon series was a western type of animated comedy also written by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, released in 1959 and running three seasons (until 1962) and airing forty-five 30-minute episodes. This series was set in the American old west and depicted Quick Draw (a horse character) as a sheriff who didn't always see "the forest for the trees". He had a side kick named Baba Looey, a Mexican burro, who, being the more thoughtful of the two, frequently saw the flaw in Quick Draw's plans. In his vain attempt to alert Quick Draw to the flaw, his coined response of "I don' thin' we should be doing..." was always interrupted by Quick Draw's coined response, "I'll do the 'thin-in' around here" ... only to result in some disastrous result, requiring Quick Draw to admit that he should have listened to Baba Looey in the first place!

These pop culture spotlights are cute to be sure but they're also quite educational in that they teach youngsters about many "adult" situations and emotions, helping them understand how to deal with them ... all this being done in an entertaining way in which they can relate and understand easily.
