Dog Names Meaning Confident

In 1937, a sailor adopted a small puppy as a gift for his girlfriend. Unfortunately, the girl was unable to keep the pooch, so the sailor was left with the little pup. He wasn't sure what to do with the tiny dog, so he snuck it on board ship. However, during the night the small puppy started to bark and whine, so all of the sailor's crew members became alerted to the dog's presence. However, they were unable to resist the darling appeal of the puppy. The dog was officially enlisted into the service. His enlistment papers were signed with his paw print. The dog also went on to gain his very own service record, identification tags, Red Cross, and ship's bunk. 

Sinbad was a confident and outgoing pooch who served proudly as a mascot aboard the U.S.S. Campbell ship for eleven years. During World War II, the U.S.S. Campbell patrolled the Atlantic Ocean in search of enemy ships. The boat and crew successfully sank six hostile submarines in less than 12 hours. Unfortunately, during the battle, the ship was severely damaged, so most of the team was removed for safety. However, Sinbad remained aboard with the skeleton crew. During the years, Sinbad's shipmates had developed the belief that as long as the dog was onboard then the ship stayed unsinkable. 

During the days aboard ship, Sinbad spent his time uplifting the sailor's spirits with his confident and happy nature. The only thing that the pooch did not like about life at sea was the loud noise of gunfire. During battles, Sinbad would retreat to his bunk to cover his ears with his paws. Whenever the ship docked, and the sailors were given liberties, the pooch would accompany his shipmates to all of the bars. The dog was even known to indulge in beer and whiskey. 

Eddie Lloyd, the editor of the old Coast Guard magazine, stated in an interview, "Sinbad is a salty sailor, but he's not a good sailor. He'll never rate gold hash marks nor good conduct medals. He's been on report several times, and he's raised hell in a number of ports. On a few occasions, he has embarrassed the United States Government by creating disturbances in foreign zones. Perhaps that's why Coast Guardsmen love Sinbad; he's as bad as the worst and as good as the best of us."  

Sinbad's presence made a significant impact on the crew of the ship throughout the years. He was awarded six campaign ribbons and five battle stars. Sinbad was one of only two dogs ever to be considered a non-commissioned officer in the U.S. military. Upon his retirement, he resided at the Barnegat Coast Guard Station in New Jersey. Sinbad passed away on December 30, 1951. The salty pooch was buried beneath the station’s flagstaff.
