Dog Names Meaning Fearless

Across the United States, there are innumerable illegal dog fighting rings. The people who host such fights often use Pit Bulls or Dogo Argentinos to fight. Dog fighting is a felony across the nation, but the blood sport continues to take center stage in many backroad locations. Even being a spectator at such an event is considered a crime. 

In 2015, the police and special agents with the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals raided a dog fighting facility. They rescued over 30 Pit Bulls from the location. Rob Scheinberg, the co-founder of a rescue and sanctuary in Ontario, was determined to rehabilitate and save as many of the dogs as he possibly could. Many people mistakenly believe that once a dog has participated in the blood sport, they can never be rehabilitated and live a healthy lifestyle. However, many individuals work tirelessly to overcome the mental and emotional scars that the canines suffer from a life of fighting. Robert Scheinberg says, “I thought, ‘There is no way there are not a few good dogs.' ” 

The dogs who were confiscated during the raid underwent extensive mental and behavioral assessments to determine if the dogs were dangerous or could be rehabilitated to live as family pets. Unfortunately, 21 of the confiscated dogs were deemed hopeless and set to be euthanized. One of the dogs was a tan and black muscular Pit Bull called Dallas. Sheinberg fought a long legal battle to save the dogs that were scheduled to be put down. He eventually won 18 of the dogs and Dallas was one of the dogs. His rescue, Dog Tails, agreed to fund the care and transport of the dogs until they could be rehabilitated and placed into homes. 

Jen Deane, the founder, and president of a rescue group called Pit Sisters took particular notice of Dallas. Unlike the other dogs, Dallas had a strong ball drive and appeared to care about what humans thought of him. He sought verbal praise. It was decided that Dallas would be trained to be a police dog that specialized in narcotics. 

K-9 trainer Bruce Myers took Dallas to Florida to undergo narcotics training. After training, 3-year-old  Dallas became one of the first Pit Bulls to ever successfully train as a police dog after being rescued from a dog fighting ring.

“He will save many lives,” Myers said. “If he helps take one brick of heroin off the street, that can save 1,000 people. And he will be incredibly proficient by the time he leaves here.”
