Many dogs throughout pop culture have to appear tough – either because of their role or because they are a small dog with a big personality. Therefore, you are not short of options if you want to give your dog a name from a film or TV show. Bruiser and Butch are two dog names meaning manly that also took center stage in the movie scene.

Bruiser is Elle’s dog in the 2001 film Legally Blonde, starring Reese Witherspoon. Elle is a sorority girl trying to win back her boyfriend by earning a degree in law. Bruiser is her Chihuahua who goes everywhere with her, and who she found abandoned before rescuing him. Elle is very close with Bruiser and even shares the same star sign – Gemini.

In Legally Blonde, Bruiser appears more as a companion but has a far more prominent role in the second film Legally Blonde 2. After Bruiser discovers someone is mistreating his mom, Elle begins to try to change animal rights. Bruiser also has two nephews Spike and Butch, owned by Elle’s cousins Annie and Izzy.

In the same film, Elle discovers Bruiser is gay when a Doggy Day Spa gets in touch with her to tell her a congressman’s Rottweiler, Leslie, has become Bruiser’s love interest. After filming, much of the fan club forgot about Bruiser, played by Moonie. It wasn’t until November 2016 that the world remembered. Reece Witherspoon who played Elle in Legally Blonde wrote a lovely tribute to Moonie who had passed away at the ripe old age of 18.

Another manly dog in pop culture is Butch, a field agent in the 2001 film Cats & Dogs. The movie follows a secret war between cats and dogs and stars a range of animals, including the Anatolian Shepherd Butch. Butch is Lou’s mentor and uses Alec Baldwin’s voice.

Butch has quite a prominent role in the film, defusing situations and ensuring all the other dogs are on track for their mission to win against cats. His breed is also quite interesting, as he is an Anatolian Shepherd. Such a dog has a high prey drive (perfect for chasing cats) and is large, rugged, and reliable with excellent sight, hearing, and agility. If any dog is going to be a field agent, it should be an Anatolian Shepherd.

With the help of a Doberman Pinscher, an Old English Sheepdog, and a Chinese Crested dog, the dynamic group of dogs was able to defeat the evil cats – Exotic Shorthairs, Devon Rex, and Russian Blues.
