Dog Names Meaning Queen

While none of these names actually made our list, they certainly could have. Even if they don’t mean queen, they were certainly beloved by one for a significant portion of their lives. 

One of the most famous royal dogs belonged to Marie Antoinette, who was widely known to love dogs. One of her favorites, Mops, a tawny-colored Pug, is part of a famous historical anecdote because of it. While making her first trek to France from her homeland of Austria to marry the Dauphin, she had to be separated from her beloved dog at the border, primarily because, despite her affinity for them, they weren’t trusted in royal circles, and their often reckless and dirty nature was considered a liability before and during public and private appearances. They were eventually reunited and she continued to spoil him with luxurious accommodations and most of her spare attention. 

Mary, Queen of Scots had a much more dramatic end to her relationship with her faithful companions. During her reign, her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I of England was so paranoid about having her throne taken from her, she imprisoned Mary, her only comforts the company of her Maltese Terriers. When it was discovered that Mary had been involved in a plot to kill Elizabeth, she was sentenced to death, but still refused to part with one of her favorite dogs. On her way to the beheading she was sentenced to, the dog accompanied her silently under her skirt, finally appearing after the deed was done and sadly had to be dragged away from its deceased master. 

Catherine the Great held her dogs in similar regard as well. She was known to be incredibly fond of her Italian Greyhound named Zemira. Her devotion was so intense, in fact, that she not only commissioned a painting of her and the dog, but also had a life-sized porcelain figure crafted of it that still exists today. 

Queen Victoria not only loved dogs, but actually had massive influence over one breed in particular: Pomeranians. Before they were the dogs we know today, they were much larger and more closely resembled their Spitz relatives than the smaller, shorter-snouted dogs of modernity, that is, before Victoria began her breeding efforts. It is noted that she was believed to have 35 dogs at one point and on her deathbed, requested the company of her favorite dog Turi, who stayed by her side until she finally passed.
