Dog Names Meaning Tiger

Comic strips have always been a big hit when it comes to storytelling and one, in particular, has a dog that helps to really extend the plot. Tige is an American Pit Bull Terrier that is the faithful companion of Buster Brown in the comic strip Buster Brown (created in 1902). This young boy of the comic world was adopted as the mascot for the Brown Shoe Company and has been well known by the American public of the 20th century. 

One detail that causes Tige the Pit Bull to stand out amongst other furry characters of the comic world, is that he is thought to be the very first talking pet to appear in comics. Like many of the other pets or animals that followed Tige, he is an animal whose words only seem to be heard by the child he interacts with and never the adults. This, of course, presents a lot of interesting situations in the Buster Brown comic, which is already known for being somewhat racy in their topic selection. Thankfully, however, that didn't take away from the overall popularity of the pair and Buster Brown, along with Tige, went on to make their own appearances in silent films and much more. 

A silent film that the little boy and his dog are well known for is Buster Brown and Tige Put a Balloon Vendor Out of Business (which is definitely a mouthful). It features a plot whereby a bunch of small Pit Bulls jump up to pop the vendor's balloons. In another film, Buster's Dog to the Rescue, we see the loyalty of the American Pit Bull Terrier that is Tige as he rushes in to save Buster Brown from a spanking after the naughty boy tried to steal some cookies. Although it is good that Buster received some consequences for taking the cookies, it's also nice to see a dog caring so much for his little owner. 

Moving past comics and movies, we can see where the popular Tige came to stick around for much longer than those original appearances. Because Buster Brown was the mascot for the Brown Shoe Company, it only makes sense that Tige would be part of that as well. In 1999, the Brown Shoe Company put together a children's brand that went by the name of Buster Brown & Co. As can be imagined, the branding featured the faithful Tige. Children everywhere wanted a dog just like Tige and his legacy continues on today in wonderful American made shoes.
