When you think of the word axel, you may think of the really difficult ice skating jump you see ice skaters do on the ice, but when USMC Captain Jason Haag hears that word, he thinks of his hero dog, Axel. In 2010, after being seriously injured Jason was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and was sent home. The Purple Heart medal winner was in bad shape after coming back from two combat tours in the Middle East. He was in a constant state of pain and severe depression, struggled with alcohol abuse, and was prescribed almost over two dozen medications to help his symptoms. In 2012, with the help of his wife’s urging, Jason reached out to K9s for Warriors, which is an organization that provides service canines for veterans in need. In combat, every soldier is paired up with a battle buddy, but once he got home, Jason did not have a battle buddy anymore. Then he met Axel, a German Shepherd with a big heart and great instincts. With Axel, he immediately felt a constant state of peace and solace. Axel knew when Jason was feeling down or when something was going on with him and he would go to him and give him a little nudge so Jason would pet him.

It has been proven in studies that just the act of petting a dog can increase endorphins and relieve depression and anxiety. At times, Jason has flashbacks that take him back to the combat zone, and he is immediately thrust into a major state of panic, but Axel can sense this and will get Jason’s attention by licking him or nudging his hand.

Axel, who was rescued from a local shelter one week before he was set to be euthanized, was saved by K9s for Warriors and he turned around and saved Jason from what he claimed was a sure death sentence from PTSD, alcohol, and drugs. He said that he had spent over a year in his basement alone, away from his wife and three children with the windows blacked out because he was in a constant state of anxiety and fear before he found K9s for Warriors and Axel. In fact, Axel is such a hero that he won the American Humane Hero Dog Awards in 2015 but Jason said that he doesn’t need a medal or plaque to prove that Axel is a hero to him.
