Dog Names that Start with Fr

There are a few dogs in pop culture with names that start with "Fr," but two stand out most, Fred Basset and Frank the Pug.  Unlike Frank, Fred is far older.  Fred Basset is the comic strip creation of Scottish cartoonist Alex Graham.  Graham first created Fred Basset in the late 1950s and brought him to life in periodicals in 1963 when he was asked to write a comic strip about a thinking dog.  At the time, Graham did not own a dog and did not have much experience with the concept, but he took on the role.  Shortly after creating Fred, Graham was gifted a Basset Hound female, which he named Freda.  Freda and Graham become inseparable, and his Basset Hound became the real-life inspiration for Fred Basset. Unlike other comics strips about a dog or that feature dogs, Fred Basset does not have a fixed timetable or continuous storyboard.  This has made Fred immortal, and the comic strip dog celebrated his fiftieth birthday only a few years ago.         

A more recent dog of pop culture with a name that starts with "Fr" is Frank the Pug from Men in Black.  In the first film, which came out in 1997, Frank the Pug has a minor only, only appearing twice.  He is an alien living in New York City with the shocking appearance of a Pug.  When Jay is first introduced to Frank the Pug, he believes the Riff-Raff looking newsstand owner is the alien and does not realize it's the diminutive Pug standing by.  

Frank's role was minor, but he was so well-loved and received in the first film that writers decided to give him a much larger role in the sequel, Men in Black II.  Frank the Pug moved up from the mailroom to become Jay's partner, but he proved to be more of a nuisance than a help to the agent.  Frank is seen to terrorize Men in Black personal and joking around on missions when he should be focusing.  Ultimately, Frank was transferred to Zed's office as his executive assistant.  Frank did not appear in person in the third Men in Black movie because the writers did not want to rely on any one minor character carrying significant influence.  However, a photo of Frank the Pug is seen in Jay's room as well as on a billboard in Coney Island advertising the "Incredible Speaking Pug."
