Dog Names that Start with Lo

Sometimes dogs can fill empty spaces in our lives, and they can do so in some extraordinary ways. Sometimes, the intelligence level of the dog creates an environment for the dog/master relationship to thrive beyond one’s expectations.  And, such is the case with our pop culture spotlight, London, the littlest hobo.

London was a German Shepherd dog who was acquired by Chicago White Sox pitcher, Chuck Eisenmann, in 1946 while he was recovering from an arm injury.  Chuck named the dog “London” in honor of the time he spent stationed in London during the war and a relationship developed between them which went above and beyond that which Chuck ever imagined.  He willingly admitted that the depth of the bond was possible due to the intelligence of London.  

Once Chuck’s injury was healed, and he returned to pitching, London was permitted to accompany him on the road due to an unusual clause in Chuck’s contract.  When Chuck retired from playing ball and became a sports writer, London was there.  Chuck tells a story about a particular incident involving London which was captured by a sports reporter.  Chuck had quit playing ball and was sports writing and managing a local ball team.  One day while playing baseball, the other team’s manager wanted to have London ejected from the field, but Chuck quietly motioned to London, and London pushed the other manager off the playing surface.  This activity was captured on film by a sports reporter, who proceeded to produce a three-page newspaper spread on “The Dog that Made the Team.”   What followed was completely unexpected!

London began to demonstrate his greatness, prompting Chuck to leave the professional baseball scene to help develop London’s “career.”  London’s “career” launched a Canadian film industry when his first film called The Littlest Hobo was released.  This film was responsible for the inspiration of a television series about a transient German Shepherd Dog who wandered from village to village, helping people in need.  London soon became to Canadians in the 1960’s what Lassie and Rin Tin Tin were to those in the United States in the 1950’s and 1960’s, helping both man and beast as he traversed the countryside.  Chuck trained London himself, teaching him to understand commands and words in three different languages, English, German and French, being credited with knowing over 1500 words.
