Opal is the name of a dog that is both blind and deaf who is active on Instagram. Opal is a Double Merle Australian Shepherd. Double Merle Australian Shepherds are often blind, deaf, or both, much like our girl Opal. They are usually all white or predominantly white with some marbling. Often, these dogs are bred in puppy mills or by back-yard breeders who don't understand what can lead to these defects. Fortunately for Opal, her family loves her despite her inability to see or hear. Since Opal gained popularity on Instagram, her mom has started a Go Fund Me page to start an indoor/outdoor dog park to help others in her area of Washington find ways to get their dogs the exercise they need no matter what the weather is like. Her goal is to create a safe, clean dog park that allows for dogs to romp around together without worrying about the hot or cold weather or all the problems that come with rain and snow.
