Owney

The name Owney is an archaic Irish name that refers to the green of the grass and trees. In 1888, it was also the name of a medium-sized terrier that belonged to one of the clerks at the Albany Post Office. The dog frequently came into the post office with his master, and he seemed to really love the smell of the mailbags and would spend a great deal of his time sleeping on them. When his owner left the Albany Post Office for greener pastures, he left the little dog at the post office, where he was happiest.

Eventually, Owney began to follow the mail bags on to the trains that were used to transport them, and not allowing anyone but the postal workers to touch the bags. The postal workers considered the dog to be a bit of a good luck charm, and they welcomed him aboard whenever they saw him. As he traveled further and further from his home station, the employees became concerned that he might wander off and get lost, so they bought him a leather collar and dog tags engraved with “Owney, Post Office, Albany NY.” The terrier traveled to many different postal stops and at many of the post offices placed additional tags and medals on his collar. The tags ultimately proved to be too heavy for the dog’s collar and John Wanamaker, the Postmaster General at the time, procured a small vest so that he could proudly display his gifts.

As the unofficial mascot to the United States Post Office, he not only visited hundreds of towns across the United States, but he also visited many other countries, including Mexico, Canada, and even Japan. It is estimated that he traveled over one hundred and forty thousand miles by railroad, and in 1895 he took a well-publicized one hundred and twenty-nine-day publicity tour around the world on the Northern Pacific mail steamer, the Victoria. As Owney aged, he became a little more crotchety and set in his ways, and he had to be put down after he bit a postal worker in 1897.

The mail clerks couldn’t stand to have him buried, however, and they collected enough money to have him taxidermied so that he could continue to guard the mail at the Post Office Headquarters in Washington D.C. He remained there until 1911, when his body was transported to the Smithsonian Institute, where he remains today, still wearing his jacket to display some of his many tags and medals.
