This large, beautiful black dog was added to the team for about $20 when Meriweather Lewis spotted him in the town of Pittsburgh in 1804. It is never stated the reasoning behind Lewis wanting a dog, specifically a Newfoundland, but perhaps the need for a large dog was due to the amount of help he could offer. For instance, the Newfoundland breed is part of the working category and is known for being sturdy, strong, and powerful. They are also excellent swimmers despite their size and thick fur, which would be extremely helpful if Lewis and Clark were to come across a river crossing where they couldn't help the dog across.

In the reports of Lewis and Clark's expedition, it can be seen that Seaman is only mentioned from time to time in areas that were considered necessary. For instance, there were entries that spoke of Seaman and his hunting skills; specifically hunting of squirrels, which the expedition party were then able to eat. Aside from hunting, such a beautiful dog would call attention every once in a while. Although Lewis and Clark didn't run into many people on their travels, Indians were occasionally spotted and traded with. One particular group, the Shawnees, admired Seaman so much that they offered to trade three beaver skins for him. Although it may have been tempting, Lewis turned them down.

It was good that he did, for not long after, Seaman saved their lives. Lewis records the event saying that one night, a buffalo bull charged through their camp. The great beast could have killed any of the men sleeping on the ground, but Seaman charged at the bull and chased it out of camp before it could injure anyone. Overall, there is no doubt that having a big, strong dog on their trip was one of the best moves Lewis and Clark could have done. Not only for protection, but companionship as well!
