Introduction

Period drama, Downton Abbey focuses on rise of the middle-class and decline of the aristocracy in an early 20th century Britain. Upper-class women begin to take a more active role in society and some even become interested in politics and marry for love rather than wealth. The aristocracy, reluctantly, has to be flexible to changing modern attitudes in order to survive. If you have a new pooch in your life, you could certainly feel inspired by this iconic TV series and its characters.  What better way to honor this symbolic and historical show that sadly came to an end in 2015?

Downton Abbey Dog Name Considerations

If you are thinking about Downton Abbey when naming your pooch, there is much to consider. With so many strong characters, it’s difficult not to feel inspired. You might consider the different places that appear in the show when naming your canine pal.  Places like Belgrave Place, Duneagle Castle, St. Michael’s Church and Brancastle, could inspire you when choosing a name.  St. Michael is a great tag for your well-behaved or angelic pooch.

Temperament can impact on your name choice.  If you have a pooch who loves their food, then a name like Ivy would be fantastic.  If your canine friend is always happy, you could name your dog after army captain, Captain Smiley, who stays at Downton Abbey when he is injured during the war.  Maybe your furry friend has great retrieving or investigative skills and a name like Vyner would suit him, inspired by Inspector Vyner in the show. If your pooch is heroic, a name like Mason would be great to honor the war hero William Mason.

This guide contains 60 names to inspire you when choosing a name, but you are not simply limited to these monikers. Design your own by choosing an aristocratic title, followed by a Downton character name. Combinations like Viscount and Bertie, or Duchess and Daisy would make great names. Have fun and choose a name that suits your companion.
