Ten-year-old Orlando was employed as a guide dog for Cecil Williams, a blind man with diabetes living in New York City. Cecil and Orlando were making their way to the dentist via subway when the man lost consciousness and fell onto the subway tracks. Witness statements are unclear as to whether the dog leaped onto the tracks or was unintentionally pulled onto the tracks, what was clear was Orlando’s devotion to Cecil as he licked his master’s face, and even tried to pull him off of the tracks, away from the oncoming train. Due to the faithful dog’s efforts, Cecil regained consciousness just as the train was barrelling down on them and heard a worker calling out to put his head down. He and Orlando stayed as still as possible as two of the train cars passed overhead and both dog and man were miraculously unharmed.

The story gained nationwide attention, and when the public learned that Cecil and Orlando were to be separated due to Orlando’s upcoming retirement, they rallied. Seeing-eye dogs are generally retired when they become too old to work, and Orlando was nearing eleven years old, and while some dogs are able to live with their owners or with the family of their owner, but Cecil didn’t have the funds to feed and care for Orlando in his old age without the help of the company that provided the pooch, and he faced the prospect of having to find Orlando a new home. Fortunately for the pair, donations came in from venues like GoFundMe and Indiegogo which allowed him to keep his best friend at home, certain in the knowledge that he will be able to return Orlando's faithfulness. In addition, the organization who had originally trained Orlando and put the two of them together, Guiding Eyes for the Blind, gave Cecil another generous gift, a newly trained yellow Labrador named Godiva will be taking over for Orlando, giving him a chance to relax and enjoy his well-deserved retirement.
