Lulu and Pumpkin

Guyana has a lot of challenges when it comes to stray dogs, who can be found throughout the nation. The High Court, in Georgetown Guyana, happens to be home to two dogs, once strays, who are now supported by Syaeda Manbodh, an animal activist who has been caring for animals for over 20 years. Lulu, who is 13 years old and Pumpkin, who is 12 years old were first noticed by Manbodh in 2007. When Manbodh found the pups, they were part of a pack of stray dogs that hid out in the compound of the High Court, while the administrator tried to have them removed. Manbodh expressed that it took her a year to gain Pumpkin’s trust. Ultimately, Pumpkin had to have surgery to remove her right leg as her right paw was severely injured. Fortunately, former Chief Justice Ian Chang learned of the dog’s plight and donated the money for the procedure. Having cared for animals for more than 20 years, Manbodgh has rescued more than 35 dogs from the compound, from where she brought them to the Guyana Society of Prevention and Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA). She also found homes for a few other dogs that she had rescued.

Though Lulu and Pumpkin are in their golden years, they remain active and alert. Manbodh had both pups spayed early in their relationship. Years later, it is still Manbodh who brings the pups their meals, fresh water, any medications they require and gives them baths. She also de-fleas and deworms the dogs monthly and takes them to the vet bi-annually for treatment. Manbodh pays for the food and medication she provides for these dogs and others with donations from friends. When either pup has a health issue, Manbodh ensures they are seen and treated by a veterinarian. When Pumpkin had a cough recently, she was taken to a private veterinarian, given treatment and has fully recovered. Lulu and Pumpkin are inseparable and appear to enjoy their living situation at the High Court. While the senior dogs are wary of any strangers that wander around, they are clearly comfortable with Manbodh. Manbodh is very attached to the dogs, who show her plenty of love when she visits them at the High Court.
