Introduction

The Japanese word "Hetalia" roughly translates to "pathetically cute." That's exactly how North Italy, Germany, Japan, and pretty much all of the countries involved in World War II are portrayed in Hidekaz Himaruya's manga turned anime series - Hetalia: Axis Powers. In the series, the members of the Axis and the Allies are represented by human avatars with wild, over the top personalities. The manga and show mainly center around North Italy - who is depicted as an airheaded but nonetheless, well-intentioned young man. The series doesn't really have an overarching plot as it's episodic in nature and has the vibe of a sitcom; the members of the Axis and the Allies find themselves in crazy scenarios and comedy is drawn from their explosive interactions.

Aster

We sense that there was a symbolic purpose for giving Germany three large dogs. Aster, alongside Blackie and Berlitz, belongs to Germany and heeds his every beck and call. Considering that Nazi-occupied Germany incited World War II, we think that the three dogs are meant to represent Cerberus - the guard dog of the Greek Underworld. Aster is something like a de facto leader of the canine trio -being the most headstrong of the group. Aster is a Golden Retriever, while Blackie is a German Shepherd and Berlitz is a Dachshund. The three dogs get along very well and are more or less friendly to anyone who Germany is on good terms with. Aster, Blackie, and Berlitz aren't really mainstays in the series; they appear from time to time but have never been the center of any stories or episodes. Hence why we feel that they exist solely for the purpose of making a statement; that Nazi Germany was akin to a spectral hellhound whose bite truly was worse than its bark.

Fans have taken a liking to all three of Germany's dogs, creating scores of fan art that depicts all three hounds as good boys. Germany is always shown playing with his dogs or attempting to teach them tricks, showing him to be a responsible dog owner (while possibly hinting at Nazi Germany's Authoritarian governing style). When not by Germany's side, Aster and company are said to love running through the wild for hours on end. The dogs are particularly fond of areas with massive hills and sweeping plains. They also enjoy venturing into woodland areas together. Aster, in particular, is also said to be a very social dog; he and Luxembourg's dog have become good friends after embarking on a slew of adventures together as a sort of dynamic duo.

Pochi is also another noteworthy Hetalia dog; he belongs to Japan and is a Shiba Inu. Pochi differs from Germany's dogs in that he's often depicted by Japan's side. The two are almost inseparable and Pochi has become just as well known as his master, by the time of this writing. Pochi also differs from Aster, Blackie, and Berlitz by virtue of his temperament; Pochi isn't the most social dog in the world, leading him to act just as distant and aloof as Japan does. Pochi also has a short fuse and stands the company of other animals that could best be described as dull tools in the shed.

Hetalia: Axis Powers takes one of the darkest, bloodiest periods of human history and looks at it from a comedic, satirical perspective. The members of the Axis are depicted as haughty, emotional young men who nonetheless, are loyal to one another and true patriots. The Allies are, in turn, depicted in a morally grey light, with America and Britain having personalities that are only as large as their hearts. In general, Hetalia makes light of the countries involved in WW II as a means of more or less coping with the Great War; why would nations from around the world engage in a global conflict that resulted in the loss of millions of lives? Because they were all led by men whose passions and patriotism guided their decisions.

Another reason one might name their dog after Hetalia could be that they're really into cultures from around the globe - though, the series initially focuses on a select few nations, Hetalia's cast grows to encompass places like Ancient Egypt and the Holy Roman Empire. Though no character is a spot on representation of the living inhabitants of their real-world counterparts, it can still be fun to hear these characters reference aspects of their cultures and parts of their histories. You might even learn a thing or two about a nation that you weren't all that familiar with beforehand.
