Cerberus

Full disclosure, Cerberus doesn't actually appear in the Immortals in the flesh - er, in the fur. Rather, the three-headed guard dog of the Greek Underworld is only briefly alluded to via small snippets of the film's dialogue and set design. Which is a shame, really, as there simply isn't a more famous dog or monster in the entire Greek Pantheon than Cerberus. Out of the hundreds of beasts, hybrids, and divine creatures that populate Greek mythology, none have been referenced or alluded to more than Cerberus. Even other popular fantasy franchises like the Harry Potter series feature massive three-headed dogs that are guarding someone or something.

Cerberus is actually featured in a number of Greek stories, having encountered the likes of Hercules and Orpheus while both heroes were on their respective quests. In these appearances, Cerberus is always depicted as being a three-headed dog with a fierce disposition and a deep commitment to his job. That job, in fact, is guarding the Underworld and making sure that no one gets in or out without the permission of his master Hades. Contrary to popular belief, Cerberus isn't an evil dog - he just doesn't play around and won't hesitate to cut trespassers down where they stand!

Despite Cerberus' immense popularity, most people tend to be ignorant of his origin story. That's likely because the circumstances of Cerberus' birth are tangled in so many other Greek myths that most of the films, TV shows, games, and books that the dog's appeared in simply skip the subject altogether. Rest assured, we'll give a shortened version for folks who don't know where Cerberus came from and why he's so important in Greek mythology.

It all starts with the Titanomachy - a war that's alluded to in Immortals which consisted of the Greek Gods fighting their predecessors, the Titans. The war was very brutal and very long, raging on for eons until the Greek Gods neared victory. In a desperate bid Gaia, essentially Mother Earth, consorted with Tartarus (both a Titan and a place) to create the meanest, toughest monster the world had ever seen - Typhon. If you think having three heads is strange, wait until you get a load of Typhon - the guy was said to have 100 heads, 50 pairs of arms, and a coil of snakes for legs! It's Typhon that would best Zeus in combat before going on to mate with the monstrous Echidna. Through their pairing, all of the monsters from Greek Mythology are believed to have descended - including Cerberus. When the Greek Gods regrouped and eventually won the Titanomachy, Hades took a young Cerberus as his prize and reared him to be the guard dog of his self-titled realm.

Immortals Inspired Dog Name Considerations

In many respects, Immortals was a "Sword and Sandal Epic" that was made in the same spirit of films like Desmond Davis' Clash of the Titans and Don Chaffey's Jason and the Argonauts before it. Immortals loosely followed the blueprint of a classic Greek Myth to tell a new story that was more in line with society's tastes and standards at the time of its release. While the film's mixed critical reception indicates that some appreciated the film's interpretation of Theseus' journey through the Labyrinth more than others, the film's commercial success suggests that folks were at least entertained by the film to see it again and again. In other words, most view Immortals as a film that isn't extraordinarily great but is nonetheless a blast to watch.

This has mostly been attributed to Singh's unique visual style as a director - something that's stood out ever since the director's early music videos from the 1990s (Singh directed R.E.M's Losing My Religion and Deep Forest's Sweet Lullaby to name a few). The movie also has plenty of great action sequences that may be reminiscent of Zack Snyder's film 300 - another film that was lauded for its intricate fight scenes and distinct visuals. Immortals is definitely a film that's worth a watch if you're a fan of fantasy films, Greek Epics, or action movies. Who knows, you may end up liking the film enough to name your pet after something or someone you see in it. Think Typhon, Pluto, Scylla or Juno and go from there!
