Jordan is officially the Hasemite Kingdom of Jordan and is located in Western Asia, on the East Bank of the Jordan River. Magnum

It is believed that from around 3,000 BC the area of ancient Palestine and Phoenicia were known as “Canaan” and the dogs that resided in these ancient communities were known as Kelef Kanani, which translates to “Canaan Dog” in Hebrew. The dogs worked as herders and alert dogs for those that lived in the area until Roman conquerers invaded in around the 330’s BC. Forced out of their land, the people who lived there no longer had work for the dogs, who retreated to the desert and began living a feral lifestyle. In 1935, dogs of the breed once again went to work, when, as WWII was about to start, Middle East Forces began employing the dogs as sentries, message deliverers and mine detectors.

Canaan is the breed of the region of the Levant, which includes present day Jordan, Palestine, Israel, Lebanon and Syria. Dogs of the breed are found to be bright and alert, devoted to and affectionate towards their family. They tend to be gentle with children and protective of those they consider to be their people. The Canaan gets along well with cats when raised with them and their independent personality means that they don’t always need your attention. Dogs of the breed will alert you when someone new has arrived and tend to be easy to train. The dogs are playful and don’t shed a lot or require frequent baths.

A well-known Canaan dog is Magnum, a pup who broke every show record in the breed’s history. An ambassador of sorts for the breed, Magnum was often the first Canaan Dog that judges had seen; judges noted his presentation, stateliness and seemingly effortless motion.

Magnum’s victories included three all-breed Bests in Show, 32 Herding Group firsts, and more than 200 placements in Herding Groups. Magnum ranked in the Top 20 Herding Dogs multiple times. He was the first Canaan Dog to win a Reserve Best in Show and earned Best of Breed at the AKC/Eukanuba National Championships six times in a row (2009-2014).

Magnum lived in Davis, California, where he spent time in the sun and sailing in San Francisco with his owners. Magnum’s personality really stood out; the pup was calm, cool and laid back. Though if UPS or Fed/Ex came, that was another story. Magnum was honored with the Canaan Dog Club of America’s “Dog of the Year” award in 2013.
