Dax

Dax, who is a black German Shepherd thought to possibly be a King Shepherd, is a law enforcement dog who worked with K9 Officer Chris Alberini in Ashland, Massachusetts. He became a hero on July 2, 2013, when he and Officer Alberini arrived at the home of a suspect to assist in a search for the criminal who they had a warrant for. After Officer Alberini called into the home to the suspect that he would let Dax go if he did not come out with his hands in the air; Dax was brought in to search.

Dax immediately went to a hatch where the attic was and started barking to alert Officer Alberini, so he yelled up and told the suspect to come down. When he did not respond, Officer Alberini let Dax into the attic, and he got ahold of the suspect’s leg. The man reached for his shotgun he had next to him and luckily Dax was there to stop him from firing before Officer Alberini was able to get his gun. They found out later that the suspect had just texted his girlfriend and told her goodbye, saying he was about to shoot a cop.

Officer Alberini knows he owes his life to Dax because there is no way that he could have gotten to his gun before the suspect did if Dax had not been there. In fact, the rest of the police officers who were there to serve the warrant could have been injured or killed as well if it weren’t for Dax and Officer Alberini. They had not even been on duty that day but were home with Officer Alberini’s two children when they got the call for an assist. The officer got his neighbor to watch his kids, and they headed over to the address where they were needed.

Dax and Officer Alberini were both awarded with medals of valor at the Trooper George L. Hanna Memorial Award for Bravery in November of 2014. Dax was also a finalist for the American Humane Society Hero Dog Award in 2015 and won. He was also featured in the 2016 Vest-A-Dog calendar, which is an organization that provides bulletproof vests for dogs who work in military and police situations. In 2017, Dax had spinal surgery to repair a compressed spine but was still able to return to work after about three weeks of recovery. He has been with the Ashland, Massachusetts Police Department for more than nine years.

King Shepherd Dog Name Considerations

Finding the furfect name for your King Shepherd puppy should not be too hard because they are so similar to the German Shepherd and these are common dogs. However, it has to be a bigger name than a German Shepherd name because you have a King, which means they need a name fit for royalty like Prince or Princess, or to emphasize their large and stately build like Goliath or Amazon.
