Princess

Princess, a nine-year-old rescue dog in Liberia, has a mission; to comfort chimps who have been abandoned. The pup belongs to Jim and Jenny Desmond, who are wildlife rehabilitators who work to treat injured and orphaned animals worldwide. The Desmond’s went to Liberia to help two groups of chimps, one of which were babies who were victims of the illegal bushmeat and pet trade. The orphaned chimps had been taken from hunters who had killed their mothers and families to sell the babies as pets. Five orphaned chimps have come to the Liberian Institute for Biomedical Research, where the Desmond’s work. As the Desmond’s provide food, water and healthcare for the chimps, it is Princess who provides comfort, earning their trust.

Princess enjoys helping rescue animals and is excited when a new box arrives at their home. According to Jenny, Princess will adjust her role based on the size, age personality and needs of each animal. The pooch loves to cover the animals with kisses and is very protective; her efforts help the orphans feel safe, secure and loved. Princess particularly impacted a chimp named Portea. Portea was traumatized, emaciated and depressed when she arrived. It was Princess who helped the chimp come out of her shell. The pair became close friends and played for hours. Though Portea now lives with two other chimpanzees, Princess still visits her on a daily basis and Portea continues to be excited to see her friend.

Perhaps Princess understands where these animals are coming from. Princess had been rescued by Sterling Animal Shelter in Massachusetts and was considered “unadoptable”. The Desmond’s fostered the pup and ultimately adopted her.

The other group of chimps being assisted by the Desmonds are chimps that had been used in research laboratories before being brought to a nearby island. There, they were provided food and fresh water for ten years until the nonprofit caring for the chimps decide to stop doing so, stating that it was now Liberia’s problem. About 10 to 15 chimps are in need of rescue and Princess is ready to step in and help. The Desmonds are hoping to see a permanent sanctuary set up to help chimps in need as well as to support law enforcement’s efforts to end the illegal bushmeat and pet trades. A sanctuary will play a key role in advocating for conservation and protection of chimpanzees as well as where they live.
