Libya Dog Names

The Aidi is a breed of dog whose origins can be traced to North Africa, likely originating in the Sahara region. The breed was developed to work in the Atlas Mountains of Libya, Morocco and Algeria, where their role was to protect their handlers and livestock from predators. Also known as the Berber, dogs of the breed typically weigh 50-55 pounds and have an average height of 20-24 inches. The breed typically has a thick coat and resembles a sheepdog somewhat in appearance. The Aidi tends to be agile and energetic and will be protective of their family. As a result of their protective instincts, the Aidi may be wary around strangers. They are found to be a good breed of dog for families with children and do well in houses with yards or in rural homes where they have room to roam. The Aidi is a bright breed and will typically respond well to training. Because they have a tendency to be sensitive, punishment should not be used with training. Instead, positive reinforcement should be utilized. Dogs of the breed have an average lifespan of 12-13 years.

The Sloughi is another breed of dog that originated in North Africa. Dogs of this type were first found in Morocco, Tunisia, Libya and Algeria, where the dogs were the sighthounds of the Berber people. A proud and independent breed, the Sloughi is found to be intelligent, independent and loving, quickly bonding with their family. The Sloughi is very driven to catch prey, which means you will want to keep your Sloughi on their leash when walking them or they can run off after a smaller animal. The average height for a dog of the breed is 24-29 inches while its average weight is from 35-65 pounds. The Sloughi has a smooth, short-haired coat, making grooming the dog easy. It is important that a dog of the breed live indoors with his people and has the opportunity to get plenty of exercise. Like the Aidi, training should involve positive reinforcement rather than punishment. It will be helpful to introduce a Sloughi puppy to new people and situations when they are young, and continue to do so as they grow. The average lifespan of a Sloughi is 12 to 15 years of age.

Although the Aidi is not often seen in pop culture, the Sloughi is an up and coming star and has been for many years. Seen in film (movie filmed in Morroco called Race the Wind, Love is my Profession with Brigitte Bardot, and the Marilyn Munroe movie Niagra, to name a few), the Sloughi is no stranger to the stage. The film stage is not the only venue, however, where this breed is adored as the Sloughi has been doing well in competition, too. Toby the Sloughi, Best of Breed in the American Kennel Club show and two-time specialty winner as well, was the first Sloughi to be invited to the prestigious 141st Westminster Dog Show in 2017 along with best buddy, Sloughi, Izzy.
