Lithuania Dog Names

In Lithuania’s grand national library, located in Vilnius, kids can practice their reading skills by reading to a dog. Mona, for example, is a black retriever and an excellent listener. Mona and Gongas, a Golden Retriever, are therapy dogs that have received training to sit with kids who are struggling with reading and help provide them with a confidence boost from their reading efforts at the library. After all, dogs won’t point out mistakes. Sessions with the dogs are 15 minutes in length and the children are in complete control of reading to their canine pals. Dogs are chosen for the job through specialized testing. Several dozen children between the ages of four and 12 attend the courses each week. The courses were developed as a way to maintain the 100 percent literacy rate for the country for those over the age of 15.

While you may think of the Arctic when it comes to dog sledding, Lithuania offers the opportunity to have such an adventure. Nuotykiu akademija (which means ‘Academy of Adventure) offers dog sledding experiences in their forest camp which is located close to Vilnius. The operation is own by Jolanta and Hubert, dog lovers who created their forest camp to provide a home to their beloved dogs. Located in Lazdenai, which is about 40 kilometers from Vilnius, the camp is just a train ride from the capital. The homestead is a group of wooden buildings and teepees. Owners Hubert and Jolanta used to live in the city and decided to take their passion for dog sledding and turn it into a new way of life. After developing Nuotykiu akademija, they have welcomed tourists to their home and offered activities with their dogs, like dog sledding trips, dog handling courses and pet therapy. Dogs like Boomer and Hattivatti are ready to participate in a variety of activities.

Not all of the dogs at the camp are Huskies or Malamutes as might be expected. About half of them are “race dogs” which have been bred for dog racing (a cross between a Husky, German Shorthair Pointer and English Pointer among others). Because of the possibility of the dogs hurting one another, they are kept in large, separate kennels, though they receive regular exercise in the form of pulling sleds, training or running around. The dogs love to work and bark with excitement at the prospect of being chosen for activity. In fact, the dogs seem to have smiles on their faces before and after pulling a sled.
