Money Related Names for Dogs

People often name their pets after books, movies, and other memories that make them nostalgic, and this may lead to a few dogs with money-related names, particularly for some Disney admirers. Fans of 101 and 102 Dalmatians are quick to note that the only female puppy with a name was little Penny, named for her small, perfectly round spots, in both the animated and live action versions of these movies and Fox and the Hound aficionados may be tempted to name their dog after Copper, the loyal hound dog. Anyone who read the Richie Rich comic book franchise published by Harvey Comics that started in 1953 or who watched the animated TV series that came out in the 1980’s and 1990’s was familiar with his dog Dollar, the Dollar-matian, a fictional breed of dog that looks like a Dalmatian, but has dollar signs instead of spots. Only the truly die-hard fan knows that the first Dollar-matian was introduced in the 1960 series, in the story “Richie Rich and the Dollar-Matian Dog”, where Richie Rich plays with his Aunt Moola’s Dollar-matian, Buck. 

Married with Children, one of the longest-running sitcoms to air in the United States, ran from 1987 to 1997 and it also featured a dog named Buck. Buck was the long-suffering Briard that was owned by the Bundy family, and he was played by the same dog actor, a dog named Michael, from 1987 until Buck’s death and Michael’s retirement in 1995. Originally the dog of the Bundy’s son Bud, Buck quickly became a family pet, occasionally being doted on by Peggy and Kelly, and “protected” from neutering by Al. His cynical and disdainful thoughts were often heard by the audience starting in season four, usually voiced by the writer and producer Kevin Curran with the occasional episode voiced by Cheech Marin of Cheech and Chong fame. While the Bundys generally viewed Buck as a rather and somewhat dumb dog, his cunning side, insatiable sexual appetite, and sarcastic wit were frequently revealed through commentary with the audience combined with the dog’s actions and he was specifically featured in several episodes including an episode in which Buck becomes human for a time. Buck the dog became such a fan favorite that after, he was reincarnated as Lucky the Dog after Buck’s death, and Michael’s subsequent retirement on October 1, 1995, and has most certainly been the inspiration for a number of dogs named Buck.
