A well-known Montreal dog is Argon, who spends his time helping those in the city who are experiencing homelessness. This social pup is always willing to extend a hand (or a paw), and does not discriminate when it comes to offering affection. Argon was bred and trained by the MIRA Foundation, which develops guide and service dogs and he is the first dog that has been assigned full-time to a homeless shelter in Quebec.

The Maison du Pere homeless centre, where Argon works, is a mixed complex that functions as a shelter as well as a long-term residence residence for older men that are homeless. The centre also offers a social reintegration wing, health care units, emergency units and four palliative care rooms.

Argon was chosen and trained by MIRA at its facility in Ste-Madeleine. He is described as affectionate and easy to control, while not being anxious or afraid. Three employees are trained to handle Argon at the centre, which has a set of rules for Argon that are listed on a pamphlet that is posted on a bulletin board near its main entrance. For him to do his job well he needs to not feel tense; it is beneficial for him to be off his leash more often and for the men to interact with him more naturally. Six months after his placement at the centre, Argon is clearly comfortable.

Argon will eventually sleep at the centre, though until that time, he arrives each morning between 8 and 9 am. His first stop is to what is called the recovery room, which hosts men who are recovering from illness, surgery or a hospital stay. Men in this area are offered the chance to spend time with him and most take the opportunity. Argon then is brought to the laundry area, where many of the men who utilize the services at the centre are doing volunteer work. Argon enjoys a 30-minute walk outside around noon, then sit with the nurses who are visiting the men to conduct checks ups or deliver test results. Having Argon present helps the men, particularly when medical news is not good. The shelter part of the centre opens at 2 p.m.; Argon will spend the rest of his day in the common areas of the shelter, interacting with the men who are there to stay the night.

The employee who is assigned to work with Argon watches from a distance, letting the men whisper things to the canine. This is a chance for the men to talk about what they need to, without fear of judgement.
