Movie Inspired Dog Names

There are numerous examples in both feature films and animated movies where dogs are main protagonists, and sure enough, it is completely natural since dogs have been a part of our daily life since prehistoric times. One thing that changed with the advent of cinema is that fables could finally be enlivened and dogs could be granted human feelings, needs and behavioral patterns. So it goes with one of the most beloved Disney classics, the Lady and the Tramp, filmed way back in 1955, and also notable as being the first instance of a superstar voice being hired to voice an animated film – singer Peggy Lee.

Think of a love story as old as time, only set in a quaint Midwestern city and its protagonists being Lady, a lovely American Cocker Spaniel, and Tramp (as his name suggests), a cross-breed dog that lives near an Italian restaurant where the owner Tony gives him scraps of food in order for him to survive. So, Lady is a high-brow, well, lady and Tramp is a charming mongrel that spends his days evading the local dogcatcher.

However, Lady’s life becomes a bumpy ride when her owners decide to have a baby. Her troubles are perpetuated by two Siamese cats Si and Em, who wreak havoc in the house and put the blame on Lady, who goes through a series of unfortunate events because of this. But Tramp and his street-smart, foot-loose approach to life make Lady realize that there’s more to life than her golden cage she had been living in so far. Even more than that, she starts to fall in love in Tramp. You are surely familiar with one of the most memorable love scenes in the history of cinema, when Lady and the Tramp share spaghetti only to ‘accidentally’ give each other a kiss.

This sweet love story was an enormous success at the box office, proving that audiences adore movies with canine protagonists, so much so it has been named number 95 out of 100 on the list of "100 Greatest Love Stories of All Time" by the American Film Institute. Its soundtrack does not fall back either, as it has been regarded as an all-time greatest Disney and Pixar soundtrack by Rhapsody in 2010. These are just a few reasons why Lady and the Tramp is a classic family love story – its innocence, sweetness and charm is simply something every generation can relate to.
