Mango

Mango, named for her orange coat, is a Yorkshire Terrier and Cairn Terrier hybrid breed, which is typically referred to as a Carkie. This furific little pooch was found in a ditch in Fort Worth, Texas after being hit by a car and left for dead. She was seriously injured and was taken to the closest animal hospital. They determined that she had several fractures of her pelvis and spine, which meant she would be permanently paralyzed in her hind legs. Because she did not have an owner, she was scheduled to be euthanized.

Luckily for Mango, a rescue group found out about her and rescued her from the shelter before she could be put to sleep. However, she did need surgery and spent over a year to heal before she could be put up for adoption. Since her back legs were paralyzed, the shelter got her a wheelchair that helped her walk. She also has to wear diapers because she is incontinent due to her broken back. However, when she got her wheelchair, she was back to running around like any other dog, so the shelter realized that she might be good at cheering up others who are disabled.

The rescue shelter advertised that they were looking for a Veteran who could get Mango certified to work as a therapy dog with disabled Vets because they knew they could relate to her situation. Judy Walter, who was in the United States Army for six years and was still recovering from a broken back from a car accident herself, saw the ad and decided to take a chance and it was the best choice she ever made. Judy bought Mango a better wheelchair that made it easier to get around, and she trained her for therapy dog work. In May 2017, they were both certified by the American Humane Society and were given the title of ambassadors. They travel all over and visit disabled Veterans and others who are disabled or hurt.

Judy said that not only did Mango help others, she also helped Judy herself because she had been depressed after her accident and becoming permanently disabled. Watching Mango run around happily, just enjoying being alive gave Judy and others the inspiration they needed to stop feeling sorry for themselves and enjoy life too. Mango and Judy also have a website called Mango’s Freedom Wheels that raises money to get wheelchairs for other dogs who need them and cannot afford them. In fact, they have gotten over 650 wheelchairs for all dif-fur-ent kinds of animals including cats, pigs, goats, and even a mini-horse.
