Orlando Dog Names

A famous pop culture dog with ties to Orlando is Pluto. The cartoon dog, who is medium in size and a yellow-orange color, was created in 1930 at Walt Disney Productions and a staple character at Disney World in Orlando. Pluto is Mickey Mouse’s pet and was first seen in the Mickey Mouse cartoon The Chain Gang. Pluto is considered one of the “Sensational Six” (the biggest stars in the Disney universe), along with Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck and Goofy. Pluto is unique in that, unlike most Disney characters, he is not anthropomorphic, with the exception of a few characteristics like his facial expression. Officially, Pluto is a mixed-breed dog. He appeared in 89 short films between 1930 and 1953. Pluto does not speak and in his films he performed physical humor. In 1990 Pluto returned to the screen in The Prince and the Pauper and also appeared in the television series’ Mickey Mouse Works, House of Mouse and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.

As a Disney character, Goofy, another of the “Sensational Six”, also is connected to Orlando. Created in 1932, Goofy is a tall, anthropomorphic animal with a Southern accent. His usual attire includes a turtle neck, vest, pants, shoes, white gloves and a tall hat. A good friend of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, he is one of the most recognizable of Disney characters. While often depicted as clumsy and not that bright, on occasion Goofy would show signs of being clever and intuitive, in a way unique to himself. Goofy first debuted as an older character named Dippy Dawg, though was then revised as a younger character by the name of Goofy.

Ernie is a well-known real-life dog who found his new home as a result of social media. The 3-year-old mixed breed dog from Orlando was residing with the Orange County Animal Services, where no interest was shown in adopting him. With no one looking to take him home, Ernie was scheduled to be put down. Fortunately, a last-minute plea was made on Facebook, letting readers know all that he could offer and that he was running out of time. In just two hours, a home was found for Ernie and the sweet pup is enjoying the good life.
