Pembroke Welsh Corgi Dog Names

Most people did not know a thing about the Pembroke Welsh Corgi until Queen Elizabeth II fell head over heels in love with the breed. The Queen’s favorite Pembroke Welsh Corgi was named Susan, but her love affair with the breed started when she was a little girl. Her parents brought home a Corgi named Dookie. Dookie became her constant companion. It was not until Elizabeth, Princess Elizabeth at that time, turned 18 years old that she had her very own Pembroke Welsh Corgi named Susan. Elizabeth married Prince Philip three years later and brought Susan on their honeymoon.

In 1949, Susan was bred and gave birth to two puppies. This started the royal Pembroke Welsh Corgi breeding program. This breeding program has lasted for five decades and boasts 14 generations of Pembroke Welsh Corgis. Queen Elizabeth II has overseen the program the entire five decades.

The Queen Mother, Elizabeth I passed away in 2002. The Queen Mum was also a Pembroke Welsh Corgi lover and she had acquired several. After her death, Queen Elizabeth II brought all of the Queen Mum’s Corgis into her home. Some were incorporated into the royal breeding program while others were simply kept in the home as companions.

Since none of the Queen’s children or grandchildren seems to share her passion for the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, the royal breeding program has come to an end. There are only two survivors of the royal bloodline, sisters born in July of 2003. Willow and Holly are the last of Susan’s descendants. Willow and Holly are the Queen’s constant companions and go with her almost everywhere.

For the Queen’s 90^th birthday several portraits of the Queen were revealed. One of the showcased portraits was of the Queen on the steps of Windsor Castle with Willow and Holly as well as two of her Corgi-Dachshund mixes. These “dorgis” as the Queen calls them came from an accidental mating between one of her Corgis and her sister’s Dachshund. The Queen enjoyed the resulting puppies so much that she bred several more litters. In this portrait, Queen Elizabeth II has a grin on her face as she affectionately watches her dogs.

The Queen’s two remaining Pembroke Welsh Corgis are now senior dogs and there are no more of their bloodline remaining. Many people are speculating on whether or not Queen Elizabeth will add yet another younger Corgi to her household within the next year or so. Even at 90 years old, the Queen still has a strong love for these little herding dogs and it is almost unimaginable to see her without at least one of these dogs playing at her feet.
