Everyone who is familiar with Disney’s 1995 animated film Pocahontas is also familiar with Percy the Pug. This rather snotty, spoiled little dog stole the hearts of fans even when he played the villain. Percy was first seen early in the movie when Governor Ratcliffe came to the New World and brought his beloved pet, Percy, with him. However, Ratcliffe was technically not Percy’s primary caregiver. Ratcliffe’s servant, Wiggins, seems to be the one to see to Percy’s needs. It is obvious that this rotund Pug is a very spoiled pooch by the luxuries he has throughout the movie. He is given a carousel containing his dog biscuits that he can turn on his own, is carried on a cushion and even has his own tub for bathing. Throughout the first part of the movie, Percy detested Pocahontas’s raccoon, Meeko and her hummingbird, Flit. But by the end of the movie Percy had formed a rather odd and tentative relationship with the two.

While Percy is not a main character in the animated film, he shows much growth throughout and teaches a valuable lesson for young and old to learn. When fans first meet Percy he is seen boarding the ship to the New World with Governor Ratcliffe. He is of course being carried on his cushion by Wiggins. He lends his support while the new settlers are traveling and enduring hardships. Once arriving at Jamestown, Percy meets John Smith who rubs him the wrong way by mussing Percy’s coat. When Percy first meets his nemesis, Meeko, he chases Meeko after Meeko eats all his cherries. The chase ends with the newly bathed Percy landing in a mud hole. Percy’s rather insecure behavior does show through when he first meets the Native Americans and has to dodge several of their arrows. His formerly pampered lifestyle has not prepared him for life in the New World filled with different creatures and rather hostile people. While Percy is on his journey to self discovery he does provide the audience with a measure of comic relief, endearing him to those seeing him as a rather misunderstood pooch. Percy’s attitude begins to change after meeting Grandmother Willow and she scolds him for his narcissistic behavior. By the end of the movie, Percy has transformed into a fun-loving, caring Pug that befriends his nemeses Meeko and Flit. Percy even found his way into the Disney sequel Pocahontas II: Journey to the New World where he has been living with Meeko and Pocahontas.

Pocahontas Dog Name Considerations

Pocahontas was a Native American woman most famous for the story of John Smith and the Jamestown settlement. Aside from being the only Native American Disney princess, Pocahontas was a real person who lived from around 1596 to 1617. Her father was the paramount chief of a group of tribal nations located in the Tidewater region of Virginia. Disney essentially made her immortal when they portrayed her in their 1995 animated film. The reality of Pocahontas’s life was much different from the movie and many historians did not appreciate Disney’s version. So whether you are a fan of Disney’s movie or the real person, there are several interesting and fun names that can honor both and give your new puppy a name that not many other dogs would have.
