Seinfeld Dog Names

On the fourth episode of season three, Jerry is entrusted with a troublesome canine. The 21st episode is titled ‘The Dog’. It was written by Larry David and aired for the first time on October 9th, 1991. The entire show centers around a dog named Farfel. During the show, the audience hears the dog constantly barking but they never actually see the dog.

The show starts out with Jerry on a plane seated beside a drunk man. The man starts to get sick and asks Jerry to please take care of his dog Farfel because he has to be taken by ambulance to a hospital upon landing. Jerry reluctantly agrees to watch the dog.

Once at Jerry’s apartment, all Farfel does is bark and make messes. Jerry hates the dog and feels like a prisoner in his home because he does not dare leave Farfel alone for fear of the destruction he will cause in Jerry’s home. Elaine and George show up at Jerry’s house and beg him to go with them to see the newest and hottest movie, ‘Prognosis Negative’, but Jerry declines because he has to dog sit Farfel.

Finally, after several days, Jerry calls the hospital to check on Farfel’s owner and discovers the man checked out of the hospital days ago. Jerry becomes upset and wants to take Farfel to the local dog pound but Elaine convinces him to let her relieve Jerry by dog sitting for one night. While dog sitting Farfel, Elaine grows to hate the dog who only wants to bark, make messes, and hump her leg. The dog's owner finally calls and Elaine tells him that he better come get Farfel immediately. The owner shows up and explains he has Bell’s Palsy and finally takes the destructive, loud Farfel away.

The episode truly reveals the comic genius of not just Larry David, but the entire cast. They act around a dog that the audience never sees and only hears. It is a huge mystery. Viewers expect to see the elusive pooch at any time but they never do. However, despite the fact that the canine’s appearance is never revealed it has become one of the most popular and memorable of all the Seinfeld episodes. Fans of Seinfeld who hear the name ‘Farfel’ automatically remember the episode and know that he was the destructive pooch that Jerry was forced to babysit. Audiences can only guess at what kind of dog Farfel was and how large.
