Introduction

The movie Shrek was created by Dreamworks Pictures in 2001. It is about an endearing ogre who goes by the name of Shrek, who must set out on a rather inconvenient quest in order to earn his swamp home back from the annoying Lord Farquuad. It is on this quest that Shrek encounters his soon to be (albeit reluctantly achieved) best friend, Donkey, and the love of his life, Princess Fiona. This hilarious tale was good enough to become an entire franchise, and through the movies we can see Shrek grow a family and go on many different kinds of adventures.

In the second installment of the franchise, Shrek 2, we actually meet a little Bichon Frise who appears out of nowhere as a gift to Fiona from the Fairy Godmother (although it is rather unwanted to say the least). Because Fiona is not thrilled in the bribing that this pup is part of, we really don't learn a whole lot about him. In fact, his name is just "puppy dog" and that's the end of the story. Thankfully, we have another dog who goes by the name of "Shrek", our main character himself, and this little puppy's story is a very good one!

Six year old Shrek was given his name after being found by Dr. Brenda Gough’s husband on their equestrian facility in Ontario. The dog was almost unrecognizable underneath his dreaded fur, and thus the name "Shrek" was given due to his swampy appearance. The tangling of Shrek's fur was so bad that he could barely move and along with being covered in mud, the poor dog was speckled with sores, a bur buried painfully into his eye. Once taken into the care of Dr. Gough, Shrek's fur was cut away (leaving a literal husk behind as it all stayed in once piece) and it was revealed that he was most likely a Malti-poo and his fur was actually white. The removed fur weighed 3.5 pounds in total! Because of Shrek's condition and fear of people, it was believed that he had been raised in a puppy mill; puppy mills are devoid of proper care.

As can be imagined, Shrek was extremely timid and shy at first. However, he slowly warmed up to people and other dogs that were around him. His health continued to improve and now, Shrek has found a loving home and family who care for him. Just like Shrek in the movie, this pup started out as a rough creature who needed help and love in his life. After the right people came into the picture (and in the Ogre's case, a donkey), the tough outer shell fell away and Shrek learned to accept affection from others. Even if you don't have a Malti-poo, the name "Shrek" may be the perfect fit for a rescue dog in your life, that just needs a little extra TLC to open up and come around. Either way, stories that have a happy ending are the best, and we are so glad that this Malti-poo, Shrek, was able to find his!

If you are a fan of the big green Ogre, Shrek, and his many colleagues, then you have come to the right place! With characters like the sweet, but slightly annoying Donkey and the feisty, red-headed Fiona, there is a wide variety of names that would work well with any breed of dog. For instance, "Fiona" would fit a Terrier breed wonderfully because they are independent, yet loving and loyal. The bigger breeds, such as a Mastiff or Great Dane, would carry the moniker "Shrek" well due to their large size and sweet personalities, while perhaps a little French Bulldog would rock the name "Gingy" ( for the Gingerbread man). Although it's' difficult to find any dog breed that has a fur type to match a name like "Shrek" (green is hard to come by after all) for those blonde, grey, or white pups there are plenty of names!
