Smallville was a show that first aired back in 2001. The show followed the life of a young Clark Kent who was still experiencing growing pains by the beginning of the series and had yet to even don his world-renowned red and blue suit and begin fighting crime. Shelby

Shelby is the given name of Clark's Golden Retriever, who first appeared on the Season Four Episode aptly titled "Krypto" after Superman's loyal pet from the comics. Shelby serves as Smallville's take on the character of Krypto the Superdog; as opposed to having the exact same origin story and powers as Krypto, Shelby is quite different from the crime-fighting canine; whereas the origin of Krypto the Superdog's powers in the comics are the result of the pooch simply being a dog from Krypton, Shelby's origins are were modified to better suit the themes and overall vibe of Smallville.

In Smallville, Shelby's powers are the results of a series of genetic experiments the Golden Retriever was subject to at the hands of the morally dubious Greenfield Brothers; Zack and Josh Greenfield had been experimenting on a number of dogs in order to try and give them enhanced strength and intelligence. Shelby was one of the brothers' successful test subjects, which why the dog was able to lift objects many times his own weight and size, and take damage from other similarly superpowered beings. It should be noted that the Greenfield brothers hadn't been attempting to give dogs superpowers out of the kindness of their hearts; indeed, the two of them had nefarious intentions for Shelby in long run. But before the Greenfield brothers could force Shelby to commit any heinous acts in their name, the Golden Retriever used his newfound powers to run away from the Zack and Josh, leading Shelby to be accidentally hit by Lois Lane while she was driving on the road.

Mortified, Lois immediately got out of her car to check Shelby's vital signs. When Ms. Lane noticed that Shelby was still clinging on to life, Lois loaded the injured dog into her car and headed straight for the Kent farm. There, to the shock and awe of everyone present, Shelby quickly recovered from the injuries he'd suffered during the crash and inadvertently revealed his powers to Clark Kent. Clark was overjoyed to have finally found another creature who was similar to himself and he immediately decided to take the dog in and give Shelby a home at the Kent Farm. Clark originally wanted to name the Golden Retriever Skippy but then considered naming the dog Krypto, due to the Retriever's cryptic background. Alas, after officially receiving Jonathan and Martha Kent's blessing, Clark decided to name the dog Shelby after a dog Martha used to care for when she was a young girl.

Smallville Dog Name Considerations

Well chances are if you're a fan of Smallville, then you're a huge fan of the Man of Steel himself; you probably appreciated a number of the creative liberties the show took with the Superman mythos as well as innovative ways the series depicted well known Superman characters such as Lex Luthor, Lois Lane, Bizarro, and of course Superman himself.
