Snow Dogs is part comedy and part adventure story. A city slicker named Dr. Ted Brooks (he is a dentist) comes into an inheritance in Alaska from a woman he never knew. The mother he thought was his own admitted that he was adopted, and he is the only heir to his biological mother. He discovers that his 'inheritance' is a team of seven Siberian Huskies and a Border Collie named Nana. As he struggles with the environment and the dogs, he becomes acquainted with a grumpy old mountain man called Thunder Jack. This cunning old man tries to buy the team from him, and he particularly wants the aggressive lead dog named Demon. Ted discovers that a big sled race is only two weeks away - the Arctic Challenge Sled Dog Race. As Ted learns to manage the dogs with the help of Barb (his love interest), he learns that Thunder Jack is his father, and he promises to tell all in the bid for the dogs.

The movie plot is in the location in the town of Tolketna and the scenes with the dogs are a treat to see. Just the cooperation of a team of dogs who have to learn to get along together, and who defer to the strongest dog as the pack leader - in this case, Demon and Nana who are both leaders. The story goes onto the actual race where teams of dogs battle through outrageous conditions towards the finish line. Ted, who had returned to his business in Miami, learns that Thunder Jack is missing, so he heads back to Alaska and takes the dogs he inherited, with Nana at the lead. It is all a battle against time and cold conditions as man and dogs try to find the old timer. Will they find him in time?

But Ted did discover why Demon was so bad-tempered, the dog had a bad tooth and once Ted had it removed, the dog became quite friendly and open to human company. It is a lovely story, funny at times and the dogs are natural actors. Some of the dogs who acted in this movie also starred in another movie called Eight Below. Many of the dogs in the Snow Dogs movie were local dogs helped by their mushers to provide authentic race scenes. Many local kennels supplied dogs and equipment to the movie directors and some experiences were often taken from real life dog heroes. Snow dogs are beautiful, loyal and extremely hard working. The moment they see the harnesses come out they start to bark and jump around, just wanting to go. They will run their paws off to do what their master wants.
