Authors Margarita Engle, Amish Karanjit, and Nicole Karanjit, along with illustrator Ruth Jeyaveeran, will publish their book A Dog Named Haku: A Holiday Story From Nepal in September of 2018. Brothers Alu and Bhalu wander the streets of Kathmandu looking for a dog they can feed. They pass by kites and bamboo, gorgeous sites, but no dog. By nightfall, it's hopeless. They haven't found a single dog, and their task is futile.

That is until they find a small black dog who is in desperate need of a friend. It's Haku, and through him, the authors hope that readers will understand an important Hindu holiday through the eyes of two young boys and their doggy friend. It's meant to be relatable for those who know about the holiday, as well as those reading about it for the first time.

On the cover, Haku is portrayed as what appears to be a black Labrador Retriever. He's on his back, rolling around on the grass, a favorite dog pose. His paws up in the air, he looks on at the reader with a happy expression, his warm eyes beckoning you to read and learn more. His tongue out, you can just imagine him wiggling around, his tail wagging with joy at finally making some new friends.

This book has made it possible for countless children to learn more about ethnic culture and holidays, but also, to better understand the beautiful bond between human and dog.
