Introduction

"As you wish!" This is a classic line from the William Goldman book and, later, the hit movie, The Princess Bride. Young Westley is known for telling his true love, Buttercup, that he will do as she wishes. In fact, after a separation in which Buttercup is persuaded that her beloved Westley is dead, the only way that Buttercup knows her true love has returned is his retort, "As you wish!" Westley, once a mere farmhand, was presumed dead, but, he has actually spent the time as the Dread Pirate Roberts during their separation. Westley saves Buttercup from an arranged marriage to the dastardly Prince Humperdinck, who is proven to have very un-royal behavior.

The Princess Bride Dog Name Considerations

What type of dog is most suited to a name inspired by The Princess Bride? First, let us look at the plot of the movie. Buttercup, our princess in residence, falls in love with a farmhand named Westley. However, Westley goes missing (in this case, he is lost at sea), and young Buttercup accepts the arrangement of a marriage to Prince Humperdinck, who proves to be a rather uncouth gentleman. However, before she can take her vows, Buttercup is kidnapped by three outlaws, who eventually prove to be in cahoots with Westley, who is now marauding as the  Dread Pirate Roberts. Because Buttercup and Westley begin their romance on a farm, dogs traditionally associated with farm work would be well-suited to a name inspired by this movie. The Australian Cattle Dog, the Blue Heeler, and the English Sheepdog all fall into this category.

Furthermore, for more name considerations, let's think about the setting of the book and movie. Certainly, Florin, the fictional town from which Buttercup hails, can't be found on any map. However, one can safely assume that Florin is somewhere in Europe. In addition, we know that one of the outlaws hails from Sicily, so this further promotes the idea that Florin is in Europe. The Italian Greyhound might fit a Princess Bride inspired name, as would a few other traditionally European breeds: the Bichon Frise, the Samoyed, and the Maltese are all suited for names inspired by The Princess Bride.
