She is Westley's love interest, and Prince Humperdinck is shown to be quite evil when he attempts to imprison Buttercup if she refuses to marry him. Injured in her hind leg, Buttercup was scavenging on her own away from the military camp. The crew thought Buttercup was lost, but she was found by an American soldier making his rounds. The Special Forces soldiers valued Buttercup, not because she was very brave or a military dog, but because she gave them hope and provided some compassion to soldiers away from home. Fortunately for Buttercup, the soldiers arranged for her and her companions to be taken to an animal shelter in Kabul. Buttercup was supposed to go to a soldier who had been part of the Special Forces group, but, somehow the arrangement fell through. However, Buttercup now belongs to a soldier's family in Minnesota, where she works on the family sheep farm. This came courtesy of one soldier whose father happened to be employed by the Animal Allies Welfare Society. She lives on the Minnesota farm with two new friends, a Border Collie and a short-haired Collie.
