Though the film The Sandlot took place in the San Fernando Valley, which is in California, the film was actually shot in the state of Utah. The film is the story of Scotty, a kid who is new to his neighborhood and wants to fit in. It seems the key to being included is the join the local sandlot baseball team; the problem is that Scotty does not know how to play and when he tries, he winds up humiliated.

Fortunately, the team’s leader, Benny “the Jet”, begins to work with him and Scotty develops some skills, joining the team. Behind a wall at the end of the sandlot is “the Beast”, an English Mastiff who, according to neighborhood legend, ate a kid who once hopped the fence. Legend also has it that baseballs that go over the fence just disappear. Despite being on their last baseball, when it goes over the fence and into the realm of “the Beast”, there is no chance of retrieving it. When a baseball is needed Scotty borrows his stepfather’s. Unfortunately, it too winds up over the fence, after which Scotty realizes the fact that it had Babe Ruth’s signature made it very special and he needed to get it back. Benny eventually hops the fence and retrieves the ball, though a chase ensues throughout the town when the Beast gets out.

It turns out that the Beast is not so scary after all. The team learns that his name is Hercules and he has been putting their baseballs in a small hole. They meet his owner, Mr. Mertle, who it just so happens knew Babe Ruth as they played together. Hercules ultimately becomes the team’s mascot.

Benji: Off the Leash is another film that was shot in Utah. In the movie, the makers of the Benji films are on a search for the next dog to play Benji. While a less than reputable dog breeder takes a litter of black puppies, he abandons a light colored one. A little boy named Colby secretly takes care of the puppy, who will ultimately be chosen for the role of Benji. 12 Dogs of Christmas: Great Puppy Rescue, a 2012 film, was also filmed in Utah. A sequel to 12 Dogs of Christmas, a group bans together to put on a musical holiday event in order to save an orphanage for puppies.
