Hank and his hippo were inseparable and thus the shelter began a social media campaign to find a home for the Chocolate Labrador, aged four and a half and his friend. The hope was to find a home for the two of them. The series of posts were on Instagram and Facebook and followed the sudden need for the hippo to have emergency surgery after a near decapitation from an unknown injury. The posts included Hank being questioned about the injury and the hippo receiving therapy to discuss her relationship with Hank. The story continues with Hank getting an attorney and ultimately being cleared of any wrongdoing; in fact, Hank is commended for his efforts to take care of his friend. The posts worked; Hank and his hippo, were adopted. His new family reports that he is a very sweet dog. In addition to helping find a home for Hank, the social media campaign was instrumental in the shelter finding homes for other dogs in the shelter.

A dog and his person, from Bayfield Wisconsin, became famous on the internet after a photo of the two went viral. The dog, a shepherd mix name Schoep, was an elderly dog who was relaxing with his owner in Lake Superior, when a photo was taken and posted on Facebook; within four days the photo had 1.8 million views. Fame led to gifts and money for Schoep, who was able to then access veterinary care to help with various conditions. Schoep ultimately passed away at the age of 20.

Iron Will is a 1994 film that includes dogs, part of which was shot in the state of Wisconsin. In the film, which takes place in 1917, Will needs money after the accidental death of his father to save his family’s farm as well as pay for college. To do so, he decides to participate in a dog-sled race that his father would have entered to save the farm.
