Introduction

The Yorkshire Terrier, or "Yorkie," is one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States today. Generally a very small dog, the Yorkie has been a companion to children, older seniors living alone, and young singles just starting out in life. Most who own a Yorkie treasure the tiny pooch. Certainly, the Yorkie is entertaining, affectionate, cuddly, and adventurous. Although he is tiny, he is generally fearless. He has the lively spirit of a terrier, but he also enjoys time spent on the couch with his family. Toto

"I'll get you, my pretty - you AND your little dog!" These infamous words by the Wicked Witch of the West were meant to frighten Dorothy, the protagonist of Frank L. Baum's classic book. However, both Toto and his owner Dorothy would outlast the Wicked Witch and return home to Kansas. In fact, Toto did not only star in The Wizard of Oz, but he also appears in The Wiz, and Return to Oz.

Toto was originally an animated character. He appears as a drawing in Baum's first work in the series The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. At this point in time, Toto only resembled a small Yorkshire Terrier. (He was illustrated by W. W. Denslow who himself owned a Yorkie.) He is chiefly Dorothy's dog, never really occupying any place except that of a companion to Dorothy. One special thing about Toto is the fact that, while other animals who entered Oz gained the ability to speak, Toto never acquired this capability. However, in one sequel to Baum's original work, Tik-Tok of Oz, it is revealed that Toto has had the ability to talk all along, he just chooses not to do so.

Again, Toto was not initially named as a Yorkshire, but Baum described him as a "little black dog with silky long hair and small black eyes that twinkled merrily on either side of his funny, wee nose." Some experts argue that Toto is a Cairn Terrier while others hold to the idea that he is a Yorkshire Terrier. At this point in the early twentieth century, the Yorkshire Terrier was immensely popular and W.W. Denslow's illustration favors the Yorkie much more than the Cairn Terrier. Of course, Toto was played by a female Cairn Terrier in the 1939 original film.

Toto remained a popular fixture in American culture. Later books by differing authors featured Toto as the lead character. Chris Dulabone wrote a book called Toto in Oz in 1986, and Gina Wickwar penned Toto of Oz in 2006. As he visits Oz, Toto seeks out the good witch Glinda with a wish for a title. Toto falls in love over the course of the tale, and he returns to the Emerald City to relinquish the title he so badly desired. Of course, Toto as he is portrayed in The Wizard of Oz book is the most popular Yorkie with the name Toto. Many owners "borrowed" the name over the years, however.

Yorkshire Terrier Dog Name Considerations

The Yorkie is often as individual as his owner. Some experts believe the Yorkie's behavior is partially the responsibility of the owner; others believe that a Yorkshire Terrier has a personality all his own. Still others will choose a name for their Yorkshire Terrier that is really a reflection of the owner. The Yorkshire Terrier is generally affectionate. He loves to spend time with his family. He enjoys cuddling, and many owners take pride in dressing their pooches in cute clothing and with bows in their hair. This type of Yorkie you might expect to have a name worthy of a diva, such as Alexis, Armani, or Bentley. A Yorkie is also often quite fearless, a characteristic of many terriers. A courageous pup might carry an ironic name such as Thor, Zeus, or Bear. This name is not noting his diminutive size, but the huge heart of the Yorkie. Speaking of his small size, the Yorkie may be saddled with names such as Tiny, Tater Tot, or Squirt as a nod to his size. Keep in mind that there are also Toy Yorkshire Terriers - those weighing less than five pounds. A name like Cricket or Ladybug might fit the toy-sized variation of the Yorkie.
