Zootopia is an animated movie that was released by Disney Animation Studios in 2016 that depicts a wide-eyed and idealistic rabbit, Judy Hopps, as a rookie police officer for the Zootopia Police Department teaming up with a sly con-fox named Nick Wilde. Flash

Known as the fastest employee at the DMV in Zootopia, Flash the Sloth is a friendly fellow who enjoys jokes. The name Flash has been used for several dogs who have commanded our attention over the years, in several different categories. Flash was the name given to a German Shepherd dog whose first role was that of a pup in the movie “His Master’s Voice” in 1925, opposite George Hackathorne. He went on to star in four additional full-length movies as well as four short films, with his final role being that of Hawkshaw, Tim’s dog in the movie Call of the Mesquiteers.

Several years later a Bassett Hound by the name of Sandy was rescued from euthanization at the age of around six or seven years old by trainer Alvin Mears. James Best, the actor who played Rosco P. Coltrane on the Dukes of Hazzard in the 1980s, had insisted that his character have a companion, and when they wouldn’t write in a girlfriend, he insisted on a dog. He paid one-half interest for Sandy, and she was renamed Flash for the show, debuting in the third episode, initially referred to as he, although this was remedied in later episodes, leading to some confusion. Flash the Bassett Hound, with her slow moving and easy going nature, had more in common with the sloth that shared her name than with the athletic German Shepherd. She was loved by both her costars and by the people that watched the show, and when the AKC published their list of the top 125 dogs in pop culture, she came in at a respectable number fourteen.

More recently, another dog named Flash was in the shelter. The nine-month-old German Shepherd-Cattle dog mix was deemed unadoptable due to her aggression towards other animals. Jason Johnson spotted her when he was looking for K9 partners for the Yakima Police Department, and there she thrived. She was the only dog in her class to graduate the narcotics certification course with a 100%. Her career as a narcotics detection dog included over 3000 deployments and 2200 finds and seizures, and when she retired in 2013, Jason was once again there to take care of her. She inspired him to start up Project K-9 Hero, a charitable organization that works to provide food and medical care to retired K9 heroes, as well as reimbursing cremation or funeral expenses. Flash provides the face of Project K-9 Hero and is especially popular with the younger set, inspiring a children’s book titled K-9 Flash: One dog’s Journey to Becoming a Hero. In 2018 she was named the Law Enforcement Dog of the Year and is one of seven finalists for the 2018 Hero Dog Awards put on by the American Humane Society.
