The Bully Pitsky is a combination of the American Pit Bull Terrier and either the Siberian or Alaskan Husky. He is a medium  to large sized dog. He is a good family pet, especially for those who are home a great deal. He is good with children and with other animals if he is properly socialized. He may be prone to wandering, so a fenced-in yard is a must for the Bully Pitsky. He is a highly active dog who may require a good bit of grooming. He is somewhat easily trained, but persistence and patience is key. He needs a moderate amount of exercise to burn off excess energy as well as maintain a healthy weight.

Bully Pitsky Breed History

There is little information on the exact history of the Bully Pitsky, so, in order to understand more about the breed, it is important to learn about the parent breeds. The American Pit Bull Terrier was bred as a farm dog, and eventually the dog became more of a guardian and companion dog. However, some currently use the American Pit for wild boar hunting. Surprisingly, Pits were eventually used as “nanny dogs” because they were so protective of and gentle with children. The original parents of the American Pit Bull Terrier were developed in England when bull and terrier type dogs were bred for use in bull and bear-baiting activities. When these activities went out of fashion (they were eventually deemed as inhumane), the Pit Bull was used in dog fighting. Eventually, immigrants brought the Pit Bull to America, where they became farm dogs. The Husky originated among the Chukchi, a band of native nomads. While the exact origin of the Husky is unknown, DNA does confirm that the Husky is one of the oldest dog breeds. Not only did the dogs provide transportation for their owners, but they also slept inside with the families, possibly to help with warmth. The Husky was brought to Alaska in 1908 where they became sled dogs. The Bully Pitsky is recognized by the Dog Registry of America.

Bully Pitsky Breed Appearance

The Bully Pitsky is generally a medium to large-sized dog. He may be a variety of colors, depending upon his parents. He may be black with white markings, red or rust colored with white markings, or he may be tri-colored. He may also have blue eyes, a trait inherited from his Husky parent breed. The length of his coat is also varied. He may have a shiny, short, and smooth coat much like that of the Pit Bull, or he may have a long and woolen coat like that of the Husky. His tail will most likely curve over the back as the tail of the Husky does.

Bully Pitsky Breed Maintenance

The Bully Pitsky is not hypoallergenic, but its shed level will depend upon the coat it inherits from its parents. If it inherits the Pit Bull coat, it will have a short, shiny, smooth, average density coat which will require little effort in terms of grooming. However, if the Bully Pitsky inherits the Husky coat – which is long and woolen, you will find yourself brushing your Pitsky daily. Bathe him only when he is dirty; the natural oils of his coat will keep his coat healthy. You should brush your Bully Pitsky’s teeth at least three times a week; if you want to prevent gum disease, brush the dog’s teeth daily. Trim your dog’s nails every other week. An active dog such as this may need his nails trimmed more than other breeds, especially if they grow quickly.

Bully Pitsky Temperament

The Bully Pitsky is generally a happy, sweet, energetic dog. He will bond to his family and be very protective of them. He may not like being in the company of strangers; however, he is great with children in his own family. He does require some socialization to be able to adapt to dealing with other animals. He does have a tendency to wander, so a fenced-in yard is a must if you intend for the Bully Pitsky to exercise without you. Don't leave him unattended more than a few minutes as he may work at escaping to go on an adventure while you are out of sight. If you take him for a walk, he should be kept on a leash. He will enjoy brisk walks with you. Remember that he may have a tendency to pull like his parent breed the Husky, so plan activities with that in mind.

Bully Pitsky Activity Requirements

The Bully Pitsky is a very active dog. He may also like to pull, so be sure if you take him for a walk to adjust for this possibility. It might be best to put him on a harness instead of using a regular collar. Obedience training will also help to curb this tendency. Consistency is key, however, as is a kind but firm hand and tone. Walks to the dog park or exercising in a fenced-in yard are activities you can enjoy with your Bully Pitsky.
